S. Pearce<\/strong>\u00a0runs the blog,\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/author\/jpearce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>A Tippling Philosopher<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0He has encouraged me to visit his site and offer critiques, and wrote under\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tippling\/2021\/12\/14\/my-thanks-before-chapter-4-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post dated 12-14-21<\/a>:\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I even need to thank the naysayers. Some of them have put up with a lot of robust pushback and still they come. Bravery or stupidity \u2013 it\u2019s a fine line. But they are committed, and there is something to be said for taking that commitment into the lion\u2019s den. Dave, you are welcome at my new place. Come challenge me. . . . thanks for your critiques of my pieces. Sorry I couldn\u2019t get to more of them.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0This echoes his words about me in a\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/ban-not-ban-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post dated 7-20-17<\/a>, where he said,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cwell done . . . for coming here and suffering the slings and arrows of atheists\u2019 wrath. . . . I commend him for getting involved and defending himself. Goodonya, mate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Under <a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/why-matthews-guards-at-jesus-tomb-are-so-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post dated 1-27-22<\/a>, he stated: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI do welcome disagreements because I don\u2019t want [my blog] to [be] just an echo chamber. . . . [S]omeone like Armstrong does give me ammunition for some of my pieces!\u201d<\/span> Likewise, <a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/on-comment-moderation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on 3-18-14<\/a> he proclaimed: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cDissenting views are utterly vital to being sure that you are warranted in your own beliefs and views.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0And\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/ban-not-ban-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on 7-20-17<\/a>:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI put my ideas and theories about the world out there for people to criticise. . . . I want to make damned sure that they are warranted. I can\u2019t stand the idea that I could . . . believe something that is properly unwarranted. . . . What\u2019s the point in self-delusion? . . . I put something out there, people attack it, and if it still stands, it\u2019s pretty robust and I am happy to hold it. If not, I adapt and change my views accordingly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I\u2019m delighted to oblige his wish to receive critiques and dissenting views! The rarity of his\u00a0<em>counter<\/em>-replies, however, is an oddity and curiosity in light of this desire. He wrote, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/terrible-debate-tactics-god-the-father-and-visiting-sins-over-generations\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on 11-22-19<\/a>: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201c[I can\u2019t be]\u00a0someone who genuinely is not interested in finding out the truth about philosophy, God and everything.\u00a0If I come up against\u00a0<em>any\u00a0<\/em>point that is even remotely problematic to my worldview, I feel the absolute necessity to bottom it out. I need to reconcile at least something; I have work to do. I cannot simply leave it as it is. . . . I would simply <em>have\u00a0<\/em>to counter the arguments, or change my position.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Whatever; this hasn\u2019t been <em>my<\/em> experience with him; only in short and infrequent spurts. I continue to offer them in any event, because they aren\u2019t just for<em>\u00a0his<\/em>\u00a0sake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here\u2019s what he thinks (by the way) of Jesus:<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0\u201cThe Jesus as reported in the Gospels is so far removed from the real and historical figure of Jesus, overlaid with myth, story-telling, propaganda and evangelist agenda, that the end result is synonymous with myth. . . . I\u2019d take mythicism over Christianity any day. And they call mythicists fringe as if the position is absurd? Now\u00a0<em>that\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>crazy.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/jesus-mythicism-my-opinion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">8-2-14<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Jonathan\u2019s words will be in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">blue<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p>First, I reply to a portion of Jonathan\u2019s article, <a href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/the-hoops-the-christian-has-to-jump-through-to-believe-the-nativity\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe hoops the Christian has to jump through to believe the Nativity\u201d<\/a> (10-29-12):<\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In my book,<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/0956694853\/ref=as_li_ss_til?tag=atipplingphil-20&amp;camp=213381&amp;creative=390973&amp;linkCode=as4&amp;creativeASIN=0956694853&amp;adid=0EZF5FYD09VGCEM4X5CK&amp;&amp;ref-refURL=http%3A%2F%2Fatipplingphilosopher.yolasite.com%2F\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The Nativity: A Critical Examination<\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">, I think I give ample evidence that allows one to conclude that the historicity of the nativity accounts is sorely and surely challenged.\u00a0<strong>All<\/strong>\u00a0of the aspects and claims, that is. There are problems, for sure, if one accepts that some claims are false but others are true. But the simple fact of the matter is that all of the claims are highly questionable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Here are the hoops that a Christian must jump through. They are flaming hoops, and the Christian can do nothing to avoid being burnt, it seems. From my book:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">In order for the Christian who believes that both accounts are factually true to uphold that faithful decree, the following steps must take place. The believer must: . . .\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u2022 Believe that, despite archaeological evidence, Nazareth existed as a proper settlement at the time of Jesus\u2019 birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Nazareth was a very small town when Jesus was born. When my wife and I visited there in 2014, our tour guide told us that it was scarcely as large as the parking lot of the Church of the Annunciation there. But it\u2019s been excavated to the time of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>Skeptics (like Jonathan) for many years have asserted that Nazareth didn\u2019t exist at all in His time. Their judgments are premature and erroneous, as usual. Amanda Borschel-Dan, reporter for <em>The Times of Israel<\/em>, wrote an article about this topic and the latest archaeology:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Nazareth. . . as British-Israeli archaeologist Yardenna Alexandre notes . . .,the once small village with huge name recognition existed well before and well after [Jesus\u2019] lifetime. . . .<\/p>\n<p>Among her digs, in 2009, Alexandre discovered the first example of a residential building from the time of Jesus. It was found near today\u2019s Church of the Annunciation, . . . In her report, Alexandre describes the structure as \u201ca simple house comprising small rooms and an inner courtyard was inhabited in the late Hellenistic and the Early Roman periods [late 2nd c. BC to early or mid 2nd c. AD].\u201d . . .<\/p>\n<p>Among the artifacts is a coin of Emperor Claudius that was uncovered on the floor of a corridor that led into a three-story pit complex. According to the report, \u201cThe coin was minted in \u2018Akko-Ptolemais in 50\u201351 CE. (<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/listen-what-do-we-know-about-nazareth-in-jesus-time-an-archaeologist-explains\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cWhat do we know about Nazareth in Jesus\u2019 time? An archaeologist explains\u201d<\/a>,\u00a0<em>The Times of Israel<\/em>, 22 July 2020)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Here is also my reply to the relevant portion of Jonathan\u2019s article, \u201c<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tippling\/2020\/12\/18\/jesus-the-nazarene-more-prophecy-debate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jesus the \u201cNazarene\u201d: More Prophecy Debate\u201d<\/a> (12-18-20).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I went to Raymond Brown, the famous Catholic exegete whom I highly rate (all quotes from <em>The Birth of the Messiah,\u00a0<\/em>1977, London: Geoffrey Chapman). . . . He also accepts that no mention of Nazareth exists in pre-Christian writings (p. 207) and so it would be odd for a place that seems not to have existed yet to fits coherently into an OT prophecy. This also coheres with Rene Salm\u2019s thesis in\u00a0<em>The Myth of Nazareth: The Invented Town of Jesus\u00a0<\/em>that Nazareth did not exist at the time of Jesus, according to archaeological analysis, and not until at least 70 CE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Really? That would come as big news to the folks described in this article: <a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/archaeology\/jesus-home-town-nazareth-archaeological-discovery-research-a9470716.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cNew archaeological evidence from Nazareth reveals religious and political environment in era of Jesus\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(David Keys,\u00a0<em>Independent<\/em>, 4-17-20). They actually do<em>\u00a0science<\/em>, rather than sit in armchairs and make historically and archaeologically clueless remarks about towns and people like Jesus not existing or never existing:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[T]he archaeological investigation revealed that in Nazareth itself, in the middle of the first century AD, anti-Roman rebels created a sizeable network of underground hiding places and tunnels underneath the town \u2013 big enough to shelter at least 100 people. . . .<\/p>\n<div class=\"sc-qWSGh iSUKoQ\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The new archaeological investigation \u2013 the largest ever carried out into Roman period Nazareth \u2013 has revealed that Jesus\u2019s hometown is likely to have been considerably bigger than previously thought. It probably had a population of up to 1,000 (rather than just being a small-to-medium sized village of 100-500, as previously thought).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"sc-qWSGh iSUKoQ\">\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cOur new investigation has transformed archaeological knowledge of Roman Nazareth,\u201d said Dr Dark, who has just published the results of his research in a new book\u00a0<em>Roman-Period and Byzantine Nazareth and its Hinterland<\/em>. . . .<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The newly emerging picture of Roman-period Nazareth as a place of substantial religiosity does, however, resonate not only with the emergence of its most famous son, Jesus, but also with the fact that, in the mid-first or second century, it was chosen as the official residence of one of the high priests of the by-then-destroyed Temple in Jerusalem, when all 24 of those Jewish religious leaders were driven into exile in Galilee.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>See also:\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/biblearchaeologyreport.com\/2018\/08\/09\/did-first-century-nazareth-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cDid First-Century Nazareth Exist?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0(Bryan Windle,\u00a0<em>Bible Archaeology Report<\/em>, 8-9-18), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=121724812\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cArchaeologists: Jesus-Era House Found In Nazareth\u201d<\/a> (NPR, 12-21-09); also <a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=opera&amp;q=archaeological+evidence+for+nazareth&amp;sourceid=opera&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">several related articles from a Google search<\/a>. Did it exist <em>before<\/em> Jesus\u2019 time? It looks like it\u00a0<em>did<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Franciscan priest\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" title=\"Bellarmino Bagatti\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bellarmino_Bagatti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bellarmino Bagatti<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cDirector of Christian Archaeology\u201d, carried out extensive excavation of this \u201cVenerated Area\u201d from 1955 to 1965. Fr. Bagatti uncovered pottery dating from the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect decorated-link decorated-link\" title=\"Middle Bronze Age\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_Bronze_Age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Middle Bronze Age<\/a>\u00a0(2200 to 1500 BC) and ceramics, silos and grinding mills from the\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" title=\"Iron Age\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iron_Age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Iron Age<\/a>\u00a0(1500 to 586 BC) which indicated substantial settlement in the Nazareth basin at that time.\u00a0(Wikipedia,\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nazareth#Stone_Age\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cNazareth\u201d<\/a>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s science. Sorry to disappoint! Jonathan then goes on to describe several more of the numerous possibly hypotheses of Fr. Raymond Brown. He has many <em>theories<\/em>; so do many others. Archaeology, in contrast, deals with ascertainable historical <em>facts<\/em> of settlement and other evidences of human presence, based on concrete artifacts.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">If you take into account Salm\u2019s whole thesis (which you don\u2019t have to go that far), it didn\u2019t even exist at the time of Jesus (work that wasn\u2019t available to Brown in his life, and was followed up in 2015 with\u00a0<em>NazarethGate: Quack Archeology, Holy Hoaxes, and the Invented Town of Jesus<\/em>).\u00a0 I also genuinely find some of the arguments more forceful (such as quoted from Brown above). . . . (since it is a real squeeze to even get archaeology that supports it existing in Jesus\u2019 time).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Take that up with the folks doing the\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/biblearchaeologyreport.com\/2018\/08\/09\/did-first-century-nazareth-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">latest \u201cdigs\u201d going on in Nazareth<\/a>\u00a0now. I go with current science, not desperate atheist myths, made up on the fly (or any fringe Christian conspiracist myths, either).<\/p>\n<p><em>The Jerusalem Post<\/em> published an article, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/archaeology\/have-archaeologists-found-jesuss-childhood-home-in-nazareth-650349\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cHave archaeologists found Jesus\u2019s childhood home in Nazareth?\u201d<\/a> (Hannah Brown, 11-27-20):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The location of the home where\u00a0Jesus, Mary and Joseph lived in Nazareth when Jesus was a child may have been discovered by Prof. Ken Dark of the University of Reading in England, according to research Dark wrote about in his recently published book,\u00a0<em>The Sisters of Nazareth Convent: A Roman-period, Byzantine, and Crusader site in central Nazareth<\/em>, which is available from Routledge Press.<\/p>\n<div>Dark, who has spent more than a decade studying the first century ruins that are underneath a modern-day convent, said this spot was first suggested as the home of Jesus and his family in the 19th century but that archaeologists in the 1930s did not find the idea credible.<\/div>\n<div>*<\/div>\n<div>However, the professor was intrigued and launched a project to explore the site 14 years ago. \u201cI didn\u2019t go to Nazareth to find the house of Jesus, I was actually doing a study of the city\u2019s history as a Byzantine\u00a0Christian pilgrimage center,\u201d he told the BBC. \u201cNobody could have been more surprised than me.\u201d . . .<\/div>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t said that this was certainly the \u2018house of Jesus,\u2019 just that it was probably the structure believed by Christians from the fourth century at latest to be that house, and that there is no archaeological reason why that identification is necessarily impossible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The evidence is so strong for the existence of Nazareth during the time of Jesus\u2019 childhood (early 1st century AD), that even the biblical skeptic <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bart_D._Ehrman\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bart Ehrman<\/a>, who denies the divinity of Jesus and asserts that He never claimed to be God, defends it (and rather well at that):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One question I repeatedly get asked is about my opinion on whether the town of Nazareth actually existed.\u00a0 I was puzzled when I started getting emails on this, some years ago now. \u00a0What I came to realize is that mythicists (i.e., those who think that there never was a man Jesus;
