Pearce<\/strong>\u00a0runs the blog,\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/author\/jpearce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>A Tippling Philosopher<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0He has encouraged me to visit his site and offer critiques, and wrote under\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/tippling\/2021\/12\/14\/my-thanks-before-chapter-4-begins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post dated 12-14-21<\/a>:\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">I even need to thank the naysayers. Some of them have put up with a lot of robust pushback and still they come. Bravery or stupidity \u2013 it\u2019s a fine line. But they are committed, and there is something to be said for taking that commitment into the lion\u2019s den. Dave, you are welcome at my new place. Come challenge me. . . . thanks for your critiques of my pieces. Sorry I couldn\u2019t get to more of them.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0This echoes his words about me in a\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/ban-not-ban-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">post dated 7-20-17<\/a>, where he said,\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cwell done . . . for coming here and suffering the slings and arrows of atheists\u2019 wrath. . . . I commend him for getting involved and defending himself. Goodonya, mate.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Under <a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/why-matthews-guards-at-jesus-tomb-are-so-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post dated 1-27-22<\/a>, he stated: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI do welcome disagreements because I don\u2019t want [my blog] to [be] just an echo chamber. . . . [S]omeone like Armstrong does give me ammunition for some of my pieces!\u201d<\/span> Likewise, <a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/on-comment-moderation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on 3-18-14<\/a> he proclaimed: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cDissenting views are utterly vital to being sure that you are warranted in your own beliefs and views.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0And\u00a0<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/ban-not-ban-question\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on 7-20-17<\/a>:\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cI put my ideas and theories about the world out there for people to criticise. . . . I want to make damned sure that they are warranted. I can\u2019t stand the idea that I could . . . believe something that is properly unwarranted. . . . What\u2019s the point in self-delusion? . . . I put something out there, people attack it, and if it still stands, it\u2019s pretty robust and I am happy to hold it. If not, I adapt and change my views accordingly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I\u2019m delighted to oblige his wish to receive critiques and dissenting views! The rarity of his\u00a0<em>counter<\/em>-replies, however, is an oddity and curiosity in light of this desire. He wrote, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/terrible-debate-tactics-god-the-father-and-visiting-sins-over-generations\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">on 11-22-19<\/a>: <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201c[I can\u2019t be]\u00a0someone who genuinely is not interested in finding out the truth about philosophy, God and everything.\u00a0If I come up against\u00a0<em>any\u00a0<\/em>point that is even remotely problematic to my worldview, I feel the absolute necessity to bottom it out. I need to reconcile at least something; I have work to do. I cannot simply leave it as it is. . . . I would simply <em>have\u00a0<\/em>to counter the arguments, or change my position.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Whatever; this hasn\u2019t been <em>my<\/em> experience with him; only in short and infrequent spurts. I continue to offer them in any event, because they aren\u2019t just for<em>\u00a0his<\/em>\u00a0sake.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here\u2019s what he thinks (by the way) of Jesus:<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u00a0\u201cThe Jesus as reported in the Gospels is so far removed from the real and historical figure of Jesus, overlaid with myth, story-telling, propaganda and evangelist agenda, that the end result is synonymous with myth. . . . I\u2019d take mythicism over Christianity any day. And they call mythicists fringe as if the position is absurd? Now\u00a0<em>that\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>crazy.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(<a class=\"decorated-link decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/jesus-mythicism-my-opinion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">8-2-14<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Jonathan\u2019s words will be in\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">blue<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*****<\/p>\n<p>This is a reply to Jonathan\u2019s article, <a href=\"https:\/\/onlysky.media\/jpearce\/very-simple-johno-thou-shalt-not-kill-er-not-so-simple\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cVery simple Johno. Thou shalt not kill.\u201d \u2013 Er, not so simple.<\/a> (8-23-16). He wrote there:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">[T]he Ten Commandments are absolutist. This causes problems. Since<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/admin.onlysky.media\/jpearce\/2016\/08\/09\/william-lane-craig-taking-to-task-his-claim-consequentialism-is-a-terrible-ethic\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christians hate consequentialism<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">as it does not require a god, there can be problems in making sense of their ethical proclamations. I will list some simple potential issues with a deontological claim that \u201cthou shalt not kill\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>He proceeded to outline instances in which this famous command, \u2014 which he assumes is about <em>all killing whatsoever<\/em> \u2013, is problematic:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cGood intentions, but with unforeseen collateral\u201d<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>2) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cJust war\u201d<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>3) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cAll the deaths enacted in the Bible by and for God \u2013 millions of dead hypocritically carried out directly by, or ordered by, God.\u201d<\/span>: what Christians regard as perfectly justified judgments by God,<\/p>\n<p>4) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cdeaths [as] . . . a result of cutting back on universal healthcare\u201d<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>5) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cDeath penalty\u201d<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>6) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cNot spending more money on, say, overseas aid, tackling malaria, poverty and any other issue that would thusly allow the death of many \u2013 all this inaction, and lack of funding, kills people.\u201d<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>7) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cWhat about Jesus? Was he not killed to achieve an end?\u201d<\/span>,<\/p>\n<p>8) <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">\u201cSelf-defense\u201d<\/span>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">etc etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"amp-wp-7d27179\" data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">You get the picture. What does \u201ckill\u201d mean here, in this soundbite of a divine order? Such simplistic \u201ccomebacks\u201d in argument are thoroughly naive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">Yes, I <em>do<\/em> get the picture (just not<em> his<\/em> picture). The command, \u201cThou shalt not kill\u201d (Ex 20:13) \u2014 once we examine the Hebrew word for \u201ckill\u201d \u2014 literally means \u201cYou shall not <strong><em>murder<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d All murder is a species of killing, but (clearly) not all killing is murder.<\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Hebrew for \u201ckill\u201d (KJV) in Exodus 20:13 is <em>ratsach<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/hebrew\/7523.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Strong\u2019s word # 7523<\/a>). Rendering it \u201ckill\u201d is an unfortunate translation in the King James Bible and some of the translations that basically follow its tradition of translation. <em>Strong\u2019s Concordance<\/em> (we learn at the same link) defines it as \u201cto murder, slay.\u201d So does the standard <em>Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">We see in the <a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/hebrew\/strongs_7523.htm\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Englishman\u2019s Concordance <\/em>entry for this word<\/a> that the overwhelming translation of it in 47 occurrences in the Old Testament (in both the KJV and more modern NASB) is \u201cmurder\u201d \/ \u201cmurderer\u201d or suchlike: that is, one specific, gravely sinful form of malicious killing (homicide).<\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">In fact, even in the KJV, according to <em>Young\u2019s Concordance<\/em>, out of 47 times, \u201ckill\u201d is used only six times and \u201cbe put to death\u201d once. The other 40 instances have \u201cslayer\u201d (18), \u201cmurderer\u201d (14), \u201cmurder\u201d (3), \u201cbe slain\u201d (3), or \u201cmanslayer\u201d (2). The terms with the much broader application, then, are used only 15% of the time.<\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">One page lists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/verse\/en\/Exodus%2020:13\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">54 biblical translations of Exodus 20:13<\/a>. \u201cMurder\u201d appears in 40 of them (74%). So, either by the criterion of how most Bibles translate <em>ratsach<\/em> for this passage, or by seeing how it is translated in the 46 other passages besides Exodus 20:13, or by consulting Hebrew Lexicons, it\u2019s crystal clear what the intended meaning is.<\/p>\n<p data-amp-original-style=\"text-align: justify;\">The confusion comes from the fact that the word \u201ckill\u201d or \u201ckiller\u201d <em>can<\/em> (in everyday usage) include the meaning of \u201cmurder\u201d or \u201cmurderer\u201d (in English, and it looks like also in Hebrew). For example, we refer to a \u201ckiller on the run\u201d or \u201cHitler killed six million Jews\u201d: meaning \u201cmurderer\u201d and \u201cmurdered\u201d.
