9. Matthew 10:28: Did Jesus Teach That a Soul Could be Annihilated?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lucas Banzoli<\/a> is a very active Brazilian anti-Catholic polemicist, who holds to basically a Seventh-Day Adventist theology, whereby there is no such thing as a soul that consciously exists outside of a body, and no hell (soul sleep and annihilationism). This leads him to a Christology which is deficient and heterodox in terms of Christ\u2019s human nature after His death.\u00a0He has a Master\u2019s degree in theology, a degree and postgraduate work in history, a license in letters, and is a history teacher, author of 25 books, as well as blogmaster (but now inactive) for six blogs. He\u2019s<\/span> active on YouTube<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This is my<\/span>\u00a044th refutation<\/a> of Banzoli\u2019s writings. Since 5-25-22 he hadn\u2019t written one\u00a0 word<\/em> in reply, until he <\/span>responded on 11-12-22<\/a> (see my reply<\/a>) and<\/span> on 11-15-22<\/a> (see my response<\/a>). Why so few and so late? He says it\u2019<\/span>s because my articles are<\/span>\u00a0\u201cwithout exception poor, superficial and weak\u201d and<\/span> my<\/span> \u201cobjective\u201d was<\/span> \u201cnot to refute anything, but to exhaust [my] opponent.\u201d<\/span> Indeed, my writings are so<\/em> bad that<\/span> \u201conly a severely cognitively impaired person would be inclined to take\u201d<\/span> them<\/span> \u201cseriously.\u201d<\/span> He didn\u2019t<\/span> \u201cwaste time reading\u201d<\/span> 37 of my 40 replies (three articles are his proof of the worthlessness of all<\/em> of my 4,000+ articles and 51 books). He also denied that I had a<\/span> \u201cjob\u201d and claimed that I didn\u2019t<\/span> \u201cwork.\u201d I disposed of these and other slanderous insults on my Facebook page<\/a> on 11-13-22. But Banzoli thought that replying to me was so \u201centertaining\u201d<\/span> that he\u2019ll \u201cmake a point of rebutting\u201d<\/span> my articles \u201cone by one.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

My current effort is a major multi-part response to Banzoli\u2019s 1900-page self-published book,<\/span> The Legend of the Immortality of the Soul<\/em><\/a>\u00a0[A Lenda da Imortalidade da Alma<\/em>], published on 1 August 2022.\u00a0 He claims to have<\/span>\u00a0\u201ccover[ed] in depth all the immortalist arguments\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and to have<\/span>\u00a0\u201cpresent[ed] all the biblical proofs of the death of the soul . . .\u201d<\/span>\u00a0and he confidently asserted:<\/span>\u00a0\u201cthe immortality of the soul is at the root of almost all destructive deception and false religion.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0He himself admits on page 18 of his Introduction that what he is opposing is held by<\/span>\u00a0\u201cnearly all the Christians in the world.\u201d <\/span>A sincere unbiblical error (and I assume his sincerity) is no less dangerous than a deliberate lie, and we apologists will be \u201cjudged with greater strictness\u201d for any false teachings that we spread (Jas 3:1).<\/span><\/p>\n

I use RSV for the Bible passages (including ones that Banzoli cites) unless otherwise indicated. Google Translate is utilized to render Lucas\u2019 Portugese into English. Occasionally I slightly modify clearly inadequate translations, so that his words will read more smoothly and meaningfully in English. His words will be in<\/span> blue<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Matthew 10:28<\/strong> And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first thing that strikes the eye of any attentive observer is that the only text used to say that the soul is immortal is one that says that it is destroyed along with the body in hell. Although the immortalists here resort to the typical ploy that \u201cdestroying\u201d does not means \u201cannihilate\u201d, but rather its opposite, any attempt to manipulate this specific text is thwarted by the context, which leaves no room for idea of \u200b\u200bmerely \u201cspiritual\u201d destruction or anything of the sort. . . . The simple fact that the first part of the verse speaks of literal death and that the second part is an antithesis of the first already attests that Jesus was talking about annihilation. The clear and manifest sense is, that God kills more than men are able to kill \u2013 because, while these kill only the body, God destroys body and soul.<\/span> (p. 269)<\/p>\n

The soul outlives<\/em> the body, so it cannot be\u00a0equated<\/i> with man in every instance. The soul sleep view doesn\u2019t even survive this one verse. But there\u2019s much more:<\/p>\n

2 Corinthians 5:8<\/strong> . . . we would rather be away from the body<\/em> and at home with the Lord.<\/p>\n

Philippians 1:21-24<\/strong> \u00a0For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. [22] If it is to be life in the flesh<\/em>, that means fruitful labor for me. Yet which I shall choose I cannot tell. [23] I am hard pressed between the two. My desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better. [24] But to remain in the flesh<\/em> is more necessary on your account.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

If Paul was nonexistent after death, since a soul supposedly can\u2019t exist apart from a body, how could he be \u201chome with the Lord\u201d and \u201cbe with Christ\u201d while absent from his \u201cbody\u201d and \u201cflesh\u201d?<\/p>\n

The Greek word for \u201cdestroy\u201d in Matthew 10:28 is apollumi<\/em> (Strong\u2019s word #622<\/a>). Thayer\u2019s Lexicon<\/em> defines its use in this verse as meaning: \u201cmetaphorically,\u00a0to devote or give over to eternal misery.\u201d W. E. Vine\u2019s Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words<\/em> (under \u201cDestroy\u201d<\/a>) concurs:<\/span><\/p>\n

The idea is not extinction but ruin, loss, not of being, but of well-being. This is clear from its use, as, e.g., of the marring of wine skins,\u00a0Luke 5:37<\/a><\/span>; of lost sheep, i.e., lost to the shepherd, metaphorical of spiritual destitution,\u00a0Luke 15:4,6<\/a><\/span>\u00a0, etc.; the lost son,\u00a0Luke 15:24<\/a><\/span>; of the perishing of food,\u00a0John 6:27<\/a><\/span>; of gold,\u00a01\u00a0Peter 1:7<\/a><\/span>\u00a0. So of persons,\u00a0Matthew 2:13<\/a><\/span>\u00a0, \u201cdestroy;\u201d\u00a0Matthew 8:25<\/a><\/span>\u00a0, \u201cperish;\u201d\u00a0Matthew 22:7<\/a><\/span>;\u00a027:20<\/a><\/span>; of the loss of well-being in the case of the unsaved hereafter,\u00a0Matthew 10:28<\/a><\/span>;\u00a0Luke 13:3,5<\/a><\/span>;\u00a0John 3:16<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Banzoli and other soul sleep heretics contend that apollumi<\/em> must mean \u201cannihilation<\/em>\u201d in Matthew 10:28. But it doesn\u2019t, according to the two standard linguistic sources above, and another equally renowned biblical linguist.\u00a0A. T. Robertson, in his Word Pictures of the New Testament<\/em>, for this verse<\/a>, states: \u201c\u2018Destroy\u2019 here is not annihilation, but eternal punishment in Gehenna (the real hell) . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

To illustrate that apollumi<\/em> can\u2019t possibly always mean \u201cannihilation\u201d or \u201cabsolute destruction\u201d we need only see its use in other verses. I have substituted annihilation<\/em> or annihilate<\/em>d, etc. in them, to show how ridiculous that meaning would be:<\/p>\n

Matthew 10:6<\/strong> but go rather to the annihilated sheep of the house of Israel.<\/p>\n

Matthew 10:39<\/strong> He who finds his life will lose it, and he who annihilates his life for my sake will find it.<\/p>\n

Matthew 16:25<\/strong> For whoever would save his life will annihilate it, and whoever annihilates his life for my sake will find it.<\/p>\n

Luke 5:37<\/strong> And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be annihilated.<\/p>\n

Luke 15:4, 6<\/strong> What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost, until he finds it? . . . [6] And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was annihilated.\u2019<\/p>\n

Luke 15:24<\/strong> for this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was annihilated, and is found.\u2019 . . .<\/p>\n

John 6:27<\/strong> Do not labor for the food which is annihilated, but for the food which endures to eternal life, . . .<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Banzoli concedes that the word is used in different ways: \u201capollumi can also mean \u201close\u201d, depending on the context (as in Luke 15:4, which speaks of the lost sheep, and Luke 15:9, which speaks of the lost coin) . . . many words often took on more than one meaning depending on the context\u201d<\/span> (p. 271).<\/p>\n

The question basically comes down to: \u201cshall we trust Lucas Banzoli for the definitive interpretation of apollumi<\/em> in Matthew 10:28, or actual biblical linguists<\/em> such as Vine, Thayer, and Robertson?\u201d I choose the latter, and highly recommend that my readers do the same. And this should especially be the case, seeing that the apostate Banzoli \u201cpreaches another Jesus<\/a> than the one\u201d Paul preached (2 Cor 11:4).<\/p>\n
