But what does the <em>Bible<\/em> teach? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In the Old Testament, Lot makes such a request of two angels, who were sent by God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 19:13):<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Genesis 19:20<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> (RSV) \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Behold, yonder city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there . . . and my life will be saved!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">One of them grants his \u201cprayer\u201d (19:21): \u201cBehold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.\u201d Someone might say, \u201cbut the angel wasn\u2019t in heaven.\u201d Location makes no difference: the angel still fulfilled an intercessory request. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Angels can talk to us from heaven. For example: \u201cthe angel of God called to Hagar from heaven\u201d (Gen 21:17). And we know that angels pray to God for us; such as the \u201cangel of the Lord\u201d praying to God for the inhabitants of Jerusalem and other cities of Judah (Zech 1:12), and the angel offering to God at the altar in heaven the \u201cprayers of the saints\u201d (Rev 8:3-4).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When Jacob wrestled with the angel (Gen 32:24-29), he asked him to bless him (32:26), and the angel did so (32:29). Moreover, when Jacob (Israel) blessed his sons Joseph and Manasseh, he not only asked God to bless them, but also an angel (\u201cthe angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads\u201d: Gen 48:16). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">One common response to arguments like this is to note that the \u201cangel of the Lord\u201d is actually God Himself, or Jesus in a sort of pre-incarnate manifestation or \u201ctheophany\u201d: as suggested by many passages (Gen 22:10-18; 31:11-13; Ex 3:2-6, 14-16 [Moses and the burning bush]; 13:21 cf. 14:19; Jud 2:1; 6:12-14; Josh 5:14-15; Zech 12:8; Acts 8:26, 29). This is a quite respectable harmonization of the scriptural data: held in fact by many Eastern Church fathers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Yet in other passages he is <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>distinguished<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> from God. (Zech 1:12 above, and the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>2 Samuel 24:16<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> And when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented of the evil, and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, \u201cIt is enough; now stay your hand.\u201d And the angel of the LORD was by the threshing floor of Arau\u2019nah the Jeb\u2019usite. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">This ambiguity (seeming equation with God in many places, and distinction from Him in others) is explained by St. Augustine, as cited in the 1911 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Catholic Encyclopedia<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> article on \u201cAngels\u201d:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">St. Augustine (Sermo vii, de Scripturis, P.G. V) when treating of the burning bush (Exodus 3) . . . points out: \u201cElsewhere in the Bible when a prophet speaks it is yet said to be the Lord who speaks, not of course because the prophet is the Lord but because the Lord is in the prophet; and so in the same way when the Lord condescends to speak through the mouth of a prophet or an angel, it is the same as when he speaks by a prophet or apostle, and the angel is correctly termed an angel if we consider him himself, but equally correctly is he termed \u2018the Lord\u2019 because God dwells in him. . . . It is the name of the indweller, not of the temple. . . .\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Scripture also clarifies how the angel of the Lord is a unique representative of God:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Exodus 23:20-22<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> \u201cBehold,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i> I send an angel <\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> [21] Give heed to him and hearken to his voice, do not rebel against him, for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>he will not pardon your transgression<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">; for <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>my name is in him<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">. [22] <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But if you hearken attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">[23] When <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>my angel<\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> goes before you, . . .\u201d (cf. 33:14)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The angel being delegated to pardon transgressions is an interesting precursor to priestly absolution and \u201cbinding and loosing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Therefore, given the above Scripture and analysis we may also, I submit, plausibly interpret the \u201cangel of the Lord\u201d as a created angel who nevertheless profoundly \u201ccarries\u201d God\u2019s name and presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Such intermediaries between men and God should not surprise us, since even the Law was mediated to men by angels: \u201cdelivered\u201d by them (Acts 7:53), <\/span><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">\u201cordained by angels through an intermediary\u201d (Gal 3:19), and \u201cdeclared by angels\u201d (Heb 2:2). They even help distribute His grace (Rev 1:4).
