St. Hilary of Poitiers (c. 315 to 368)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

. . . we being buried with His Death in Baptism may return to the life of eternity\u00a0(since regeneration to life is death to the former life), and dying to our\u00a0sins\u00a0be born again to\u00a0immortality, . . . (On the Trinity<\/em>, Bk. I, 13<\/a>)<\/p>\n

There is one Lord and one baptism of regeneration . . . they have put on one Christ through the\u00a0nature\u00a0of one\u00a0baptism . . . born again in one\u00a0baptism . . . one regenerating baptism . . .(On the Trinity<\/em>, Bk. VIII, 7-9<\/a>)<\/p>\n

In whom you were also\u00a0circumcised\u00a0with a\u00a0circumcision\u00a0not made with hands, in the stripping off of the body of the flesh, but with the\u00a0circumcision\u00a0of\u00a0Christ, having been buried with Him in\u00a0baptism, wherein you were also raised with Him through\u00a0faith\u00a0in the working of\u00a0God, who raised Him from the dead<\/em>. Baptism is bringing forth \u2014 the heavenly from the earthly! (Hymn 6 for Epiphany<\/em>, 8<\/a>)<\/p>\n

The\u00a0baptized\u00a0when they come up are sanctified;\u2014 the sealed when they go down are pardoned.\u2014 They who come up have put on\u00a0glory\u00a0\u2014 they who go down have cast off\u00a0sin.\u2014 Adam put off his\u00a0glory\u00a0in a moment \u2014 you have been clothed with\u00a0glory in a moment. The leprosy was done away in the water, as transgressions in Baptism. Today, lo! Your offenses are blotted out \u2014 and your names are written down.\u2014 The\u00a0priest\u00a0blots out in the water \u2014 and Christ writes down in\u00a0Heaven.\u2014 By the blotting out and the writing down \u2014 lo! The fountain of Baptism \u2014 is set to protect<\/em> against the Flame. \u2014 This is the water that avails \u2014 for the quenching of Gehenna. (Hymn 7 for Epiphany<\/em>, 16<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Baptism though it be<\/em> high \u2014 in its mercy has stooped down with us:\u2014 for the atonement is from above \u2014 that has come down unto sinners. (Hymn 7 for Epiphany<\/em>, 20<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Jeremiah in the womb He sanctified and taught. . . . how much more shall Baptism sanctify \u2014 its conception and its bringing forth \u2014 of them that are pure and spiritual! \u2014 For there, within the womb \u2014 is the conception of all men \u2014 but here, out of the water \u2014 is the birth whereof the spiritual are worthy.
