Thanks so much and happy reading!

***

St. Paul told us to imitate him, as he in turn imitated Christ (1 Cor 11:1) and wrote, “you became imitators of us and of the Lord” (1 Thess 1:6).

Part of imitating our Lord Jesus Christ is expressing indignation at blasphemy, where warranted, since He did that. I think the opening of the Olympics is of such influence and import that we must speak out when blasphemy occurs. If we don’t, it will only get worse and worse and more people will reject Christianity. That aspect is largely ignored.

*

This is not about currently fashionable no-limitations libertarianism and folks’ supposed rights to do whatever they want, whenever or wherever, no matter how much it may harm others. This is about the gospel and spirituality, and the souls of all the individuals involved. Even from a secular perspective, society doesn’t gain anything by one group of people mocking what another much larger group holds sacred. The people doing this are the most harmed; therefore it is a loving act to suggest that they stop doing so. The outcry I am seeing is contending that those of us protesting this outrage supposedly don’t care about the people who did this. Nothing could be further from the truth.

*

We must protest with love, of course, but we don’t refrain from doing it for fear of the disapproval of the world and the flak we catch from the world-system as a result, and the ever-present misguided accusations of “hatred” when we express Christian morality and piety. We must love the sinner but not the sin. We can do both. Christians can walk and chew gum at the same time. St. Paul wrote: “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Rom 12:2). The Phillips paraphrase delightfully renders this as, “Don’t let the world squeeze you into its own mould.”

*

As far as denouncing the Christians — however many there are — who truly can’t renounce sin and blasphemy without hatred or conspiratorialism, etc., I totally agree. But I partially disagree as to when and where and to what extent that is occurring. Some Christians, no doubt (as is always the case; people being people), have gone overboard in denouncing this. But we don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater because of that. We do it the right way and denounce the wrong way.

*

If we are silent when this garbage gets worse and worse, then we have only ourselves to blame for the culture going further and further towards the devil. If that happens, millions of souls are lost, too. We’re evangelists, but we’re also salt and light and the city on a hill. We must render our opinion on something like this, and yes, reason with them and show love, too. And again, the people most harmed are the ones committing the mockery and sacrilege. To oppose it is at the same time an act of love towards them.

*

Christianity is not mere “warm fuzzy feel-goodism.” We have spiritual and theological and moral truth to share, and it’s good for everyone. The comes a time when further attempts to evangelize are futile and we must move on. This was true even of Jesus and Paul, as well as the disciples:

Luke 9:5 And wherever they do not receive you, when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.

*

Matthew 13:57-58 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house.” [58] And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief.

*

Acts 18:4-6 And he argued in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded Jews and Greeks. [5] When Silas and Timothy arrived from Macedo’nia, Paul was occupied with preaching, testifying to the Jews that the Christ was Jesus. [6] And when they opposed and reviled him, he shook out his garments and said to them, “Your blood be upon your heads! I am innocent. From now on I will go to the Gentiles.”

Jesus also severely rebuked — almost cursed — those who deliberately rejected His (or His disciples’) message:

Matthew 11:20-24 Then he began to upbraid the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. [21] “Woe to you, Chora’zin! woe to you, Beth-sa’ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. [22] But I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. [23] And you, Caper’na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. [24] But I tell you that it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

*

Luke 10:8-16 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you; [9] heal the sick in it and say to them, `The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ [10] But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, [11] `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off against you; nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near.’ [12] I tell you, it shall be more tolerable on that day for Sodom than for that town. [13] “Woe to you, Chora’zin! woe to you, Beth-sa’ida! for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. [14] But it shall be more tolerable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. [15] And you, Caper’na-um, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to Hades. [16] “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

There are many reasons (besides Christians acting stupidly and hypocritically and lacking love) why Jesus said that we would be hated by all for His name’s sake (Mt 10:22; Mk 13:13; Lk 21:17). The world (i.e., “the world-system”; Gk., kosmos) hated and killed Him. It will always hate us, too: no matter how polite and nicey-nicey and tolerant we are — and how reasonable and intellectual — we attempt to be. The world will always oppose the message of the gospel and of the fullness of Catholic Christianity, because it is under the domain of Satan (Acts 26:18; Rev 12:9).

*

If anyone doubts this, spend a year in an atheist forum, as I have done, and see how wildly popular you are.

<div Formerly a campus missionary, as a Protestant, Dave was received into the Catholic Church in February 1991, by the late, well-known catechist and theologian, Fr. John A. Hardon, S. J. Dave’s articles have appeared in many influential Catholic periodicals, including "This Rock" (now called "Catholic Answers Magazine"), "Envoy Magazine" (Patrick Madrid), "The Catholic Answer," "The Coming Home Journal," "Gilbert Magazine" (American Chesterton Society), and "The Latin Mass." He also writes a featured column for every issue of "The Michigan Catholic": published by the archdiocese of Detroit, and was editor for most of the apologetics tracts published by the St. Paul Street Evangelization apostolate. Dave’s apologetics and writing apostolate was the subject of a feature article in the May 2002 issue of "Envoy Magazine." He served as the staff moderator at the Internet discussion forum for The Coming Home Network, from 2007-2010. Dave has been interviewed on many nationally syndicated Catholic radio shows, including "Catholic Answers Live" (twice), "Faith and Family Live" (Steve Wood), "Kresta in the Afternoon," "Son Rise Morning Show," "Catholic Connection" (Teresa Tomeo), and "The Catholics Next Door." His large and popular website, "Biblical Evidence for Catholicism," was online from March 1997 to March 2007, and received the 1998 Catholic Website of the Year award from "Envoy Magazine." His blog of the same name (now transferred to Patheos), begun in February 2004, contains more than 1,500 papers, at least 500 debates or dialogues, and over 50 distinct "index" web pages. Unsolicited correspondence has indicated many hundreds of conversions (or returns) to the Catholic faith as a result, by God's grace, of these writings. Dave's conversion story was published in the bestselling book "Surprised by Truth" (edited by Patrick Madrid; San Diego: Basilica Press, 1994). Sophia Institute Press has published six of his books: "A Biblical Defense of Catholicism" (Foreword by Fr. John A. Hardon, S. J., 1996 / 2003), "The Catholic Verses" (2004), "The One-Minute Apologist" (2007), "Bible Proofs for Catholic Truths" (2009), "The Quotable Newman" (editor: 2012), and "Proving the Catholic Faith is Biblical" (2015). He is co-author (with Dr. Paul Thigpen) of the inserts for "The New Catholic Answer Bible" (Our Sunday Visitor: 2005), and editor for "The Wisdom of Mr. Chesterton: The Very Best Quotes, Quips, and Cracks from the Pen of G. K. Chesterton" (Saint Benedict Press / TAN Books: 2009). "100 Biblical Arguments Against Sola Scriptura" was published by Catholic Answers in May 2012. His "Quotable Wesley" compilation was published by (Protestant / Wesleyan publisher) Beacon Hill Press in April 2014. Several of his 49 books are bestsellers in their field. Dave maintains a popular personal Facebook page, a Facebook author page, and has a Twitter account as well. He offers almost all of his books in e-book form on his own Biblical Catholicism site (http://biblicalcatholicism.com/), at a permanent deep discount: only $2.99 for ePub, mobi, and AZW, and $1.99 for PDF. His writing has been enthusiastically endorsed or recommended by many leading Catholic apologists, authors, and priests, including Dr. Scott Hahn, Fr. Peter M. J. Stravinskas, Marcus Grodi, Patrick Madrid, Steve Ray, Tim Staples, Devin Rose, Mike Aquilina, Al Kresta, Karl Keating, Fr. Dwight Longenecker, Brandon Vogt, Marcellino D'Ambrosio, and Fr. John A.
