\u201cFinding work you love doing is the\u00a0Fountain of Youth.<\/em>\u201d \u2013Pearl S. Buck<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last year I wrote a post called\u00a0\u201c4 things to do when you hate your job\u201d<\/strong><\/em> (which you can read by clicking here<\/a>\u00a0and it stirred up some great conversations. Those interactions\u00a0showed me that there are MANY people out there who are frustrated with their work. This is tragic, since most of us\u00a0spend the majority of our waking hours on the job.<\/p>\n

As a follow up to the \u201chate your job\u201d post, some people have asked me to write on how to reinvent their careers, but frankly, I\u2019m completely unqualified to do it. I wouldn\u2019t know where to start. Thankfully, my buddy\u00a0Jon Acuff<\/a>\u00a0has written the book on the subject and it may just be the best career book ever written<\/a><\/strong>. Seriously. (And no, he\u2019s not paying me to say that.)<\/p>\n

\"Do<\/a><\/p>\n

Jon has lived through several epic career \u201cDo Over\u2019s\u201d and now he\u2019s at the top of his game. He\u2019s one of the best communicators on the planet, he\u2019s incredibly insightful and he\u2019s also hilarious. I mean, I\u2019m \u201cfunny\u201d in a \u201cmy mom thinks I\u2019m funny<\/em>\u201d kind of way, but Jon is funny in a \u201cJim Gaffigan gets joke ideas from him<\/em>\u201d kind of way.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no way I can sum up all the career gold, wit and wisdom in this book in a short blog post, but just to give you a sneak preview, here are the 4 key areas you\u2019ll need to leverage in any career transition:<\/p>\n

1. Relationships.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your relationships will ultimately set the course for your career. Instead of looking for the \u201cright opportunities,\u201d you may need to spend more time investing in the right relationships. Try not to burn bridges. Look for opportunities to serve, encourage and equip the people around you. Think of ways your past and\/or present contacts could help you through a career transition. Your relationships are your most important asset.<\/p>\n

2. Skills.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jon wisely points out that a relationship might get you an opportunity, but you\u2019re going to need skill to keep the opportunity. The more you learn, the more you\u2019ll earn. Keep honing your skills. Be a lifelong learner. Never let your skills get rusty.<\/p>\n

3. Character.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You might have a great network of contacts and all the skills in the world, but if you don\u2019t have integrity, it will all come crashing down eventually. Character isn\u2019t something you \u201clearn\u201d like skills; it\u2019s a daily discipline you choose. It means being the same person in both public and private. It means knowing that any \u201csuccess\u201d you achieve at the expense of your values isn\u2019t really success.<\/p>\n

4. Hustle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

You might be completely unhappy with your career situation, but if you\u2019re not willing to WORK to make it better, then nothing will change. There are some parts of the world where hard work won\u2019t get you ahead, but if you live in America, you can achieve as much as you want to if you\u2019re willing to hustle. Get up earlier. Develop more discipline. Make it your mission to be the hardest worker you know, and doors of opportunity will start flying open for you!<\/p>\n
