Pope Francis recently made a simple comment\u00a0about the state of modern marriages<\/a>\u00a0which sent shock waves around the globe and instantly became a trending topic online. He was responding to a question at a conference and he launched into a lament about\u00a0our\u00a0culture\u2019s devaluing of commitments and consequently, a crisis in marriages. In his own words, he said\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a culture of the provisional \u2026 It\u2019s provisional, and because of this the great majority of our sacramental marriages are null. Because they say \u2018yes, for the rest of my life!\u2019 but they don\u2019t know what they are saying. Because they have a different culture. They say it, they have good will, but they don\u2019t know\u2026It\u2019s a social issue, and how do we change this? I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The statement that \u201ca great majority of sacramental marriages are null<\/em>\u201d caused instant pushback. Could the majority of all marriages really be invalid?<\/strong> The implications of that statement are immeasurable. An audio transcript of his words was later modified to replace the phrase \u201cthe great majority of marriages<\/em>\u201d with \u201csome marriages.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

Taken out of context, I don\u2019t know what the Pope\u2019s intended message here may have been.\u00a0I certainly don\u2019t agree that most marriages are \u201cinvalid;\u201d but on some level, I wholeheartedly agree that there is a crisis in modern marriages. We\u2019ve lost sight of true commitment.<\/strong> We\u2019ve trivialized the sacredness of marriage. As a society, we\u2019ve settled for something less than the sacred, beautiful, lifelong gift marriage is intended to be<\/strong>.
