O God of earth and altar,<\/span>
bow down and hear our cry,<\/span>
our earthly rulers falter,<\/span>
our people drift and die;<\/span>
the walls of gold entomb us,<\/span>
the swords of scorn divide,<\/span>
take not thy thunder from us,<\/span>
but take away our pride.<\/span>

From all that terror teaches,<\/span>
from lies of tongue and pen,<\/span>
from all the easy speeches<\/span>
that comfort cruel men,<\/span>
from sale and profanation<\/span>
of honor, and the sword,<\/span>
from sleep and from damnation,<\/span>
deliver us, good Lord!<\/span>

Tie in a living tether<\/span>
the prince and priest and thrall,<\/span>
bind all our lives together,<\/span>
smite us and save us all;<\/span>
in ire and exultation<\/span>
aflame with faith, and free,<\/span>
lift up a living nation,\u00a0<\/span>
a single sword to thee.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here it is sung<\/a>\u00a0by the choir and congregation of St. Martin in the Fields.
