Have you ever just wanted shout, \u201cIt\u2019s someone else\u2019s turn!\u201d You\u2019re tired of volunteering to bake the cookies, to organize the parent list, to clean up. You\u2019re always the one to organize the family reunion, to load the presentation into the computer, to shovel the walks? Please, can someone else be in charge?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been there. I shirk for a while, pretend to be too busy, and flick on the television or sit in the backyard thumbing through magazines or I play a game on my phone. \u201cThere,\u201d I think, \u201cNow I\u2019m<\/strong> in control of my time.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

But it doesn\u2019t\u00a0take long before this mindless life works against me. I\u2019m not<\/em> refreshed. I\u2019m not<\/em> more at ease. I\u2019m miserable.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

\"Shirk\"<\/em><\/p>\n

I was thinking about this when I wrote the intro to\u00a0\u00a0Make a Difference: Growth in Leadership<\/a>.\u00a0<\/i>It\u2019s about that place we all get when we want to just hide from responsibility.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s something to chew on \u2014<\/p>\n

Have you ever been part of a team where no one will step up and take charge? Everyone looks around, hoping, praying that someone, anyone else will be responsible.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

We cling to the wall, hiding our ability. We know full well that we could be part of the solution, and instead,\u00a0by our passivity, we become part of the problem. We all have our excuses. I\u2019ve used every one of them. \u201cI\u2019m too busy.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t have the right skills.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not the right time.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t have the experience.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m too young.\u201d \u201cI\u2019m too old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Life is full of too many \u201ccants.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Acting small<\/strong> doesn\u2019t do a thing for the world. Minimizing your talents<\/strong> wastes the investments that others have placed in you. Playing it safe<\/strong> doesn\u2019t impact your workplace, your school or your family. When you say, \u201cI\u2019m nothing special, \u201cyou\u2019re actually questioning your God-given talents, the belief that others have in you, and the trust of those that\u00a0you influence.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

When you don\u2019t step up you deny a certain part of your personhood. It\u2019s like revolting against your very DNA. You can dye your hair, but you\u2019re still a brunette. You can buy special colorized lenses, but your eyes are still hazel. You can sit back and play dormant like everyone else, but it\u2019s killing you on the inside. **<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

You don\u2019t bring pleasure to God by \u00a0trying to be someone else. \u00a0Anytime you reject any part of yourself, you are rejecting his sovereignty in creating you.<\/p>\n

What He Says : \u201cYou have no right to argue with your Creator. You are merely a clay pot shaped by a potter. The clay doesn\u2019t ask, \u2018Why did you make me this way?'\u201d (Isaiah 45:9 CEV).<\/i><\/p>\n

It this you, too? Do you find it impossible to run from your God-given talents?<\/p>\n
