Then I memorized it, hammering every inflection, timing every dramatic pause. As a high schooler I wasn\u2019t in athletics. Maybe it was the aspect of losing. Maybe it was because we couldn\u2019t afford shoes not available in the thrift store. Maybe it was because slow of foot. Instead, I poured myself into non-athletic pursuits. I even lettered in Speech. And this speech was a big one, the qualifier for state. It came off perfectly \u2013 my voice lilting and my composure perfectly erect for a flawless presentation. But it was only good enough for second place.\u00a0 It still stings, I have to admit. <strong>\u00a0Perpetual runner-up<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.nydailynews.com\/polopoly_fs\/1.1851300!\/img\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/article_970\/soccer-world-m56-bel-usa.jpg\" alt=\"competetion and losing\" width=\"477\" height=\"305\"><\/strong> As far as major disappointments go, Golfer <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Phil Mickelson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.philmickelson.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Phil Mickelson<\/a> has had his share, although this is not the worst. He\u2019s finished runner-up at the <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"U.S. Open (golf)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Open_%28golf%29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">U.S. Open<\/a> on five occasions. He\u2019s had near misses at Pinehurst and Shinnecock and Bethpage and <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Pebble Beach, California\" href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=36.5663888889,-121.946666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=36.5663888889,-121.946666667%20(Pebble%20Beach%2C%20California)&amp;t=h\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pebble Beach<\/a>. And <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Carmelo Anthony\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carmeloanthony.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Carmelo Anthony<\/a>, a great basketball talent, has never moved out of the first round of the playoffs. Have you ever lived in the shadow of someone else?\u00a0\u00a0 A brother who won the trophies, a sister who always go A\u2019s, a coworker who gets the projects \u2013 and the praise. Even Olympians, who train and work for years for one single moment stand in silent defeat as a silver or bronze is hung around their necks. Often, they will fade to obscurity over a millisecond. <strong>Of all the losers, you are the best<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>\u201cResearch consistently shows that Olympic athletes are happier when they win a bronze medal, than when they win a <a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Silver medal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silver_medal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">silver medal<\/a>. These findings were described as resulting from comparisons the medalists made. The silver medalist compares themselves. to the gold medal winner. But, the bronze medal winner compares him or herself to those people who did not win a medal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"zem_slink decorated-link\" title=\"Jerry Seinfeld\" href=\"http:\/\/www.last.fm\/music\/Jerry%2BSeinfeld\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jerry Seinfeld<\/a> has a great piece on finishing in second place. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s really jealousy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>History is full of knaves and fools who were inspired by nothing more than victory and vanquishing of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>So I have to ask myself? Why does second place\u00a0feel so bad? Is it jealousy?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What He said<\/strong>: <em>Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves (Philippians 2:3).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s really jealousy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Competition is healthy, as it keeps us producing and advancing. The race to the moon, or to build a faster chip, or to launch a product helps society create. But there is a path of least resistance that is unhealthy, crass, ugly, and \u2026 jealous of those who win.<\/p>\n<p>History is full of knaves and fools who were inspired by nothing more than victory and vanquishing of the competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So where do I fall?
