We biked, and ran, and threw sticks and chased girls. When we tired of baseball, dirt smudged on our face, we would all gather at Joe\u2019s house for the next phase of our outdoor adventure.Hide and seek<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"post-rail\">\n<div class=\"article-aside-ad\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.crossmap.com\/images\/2\/57\/25750.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Living in a neighborhood next to the open fields gave us opportunity to hide in the willows, under the broken tree limbs and in the makeshift fort next to Lanny\u2019s house. We could play for hours.<\/p>\n<p>Quickly, one-by-one, we would quickly shout.<em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cNot it.\u201d<\/em><em>\u201cNot it.\u201d<\/em><em>\u201d Not it.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At first, it was a great thrill to be \u201cit.\u201d \u00a0I would find the hiding place, like the one behind the couch, slither down into the slot, and then pull a blanket over the top. My friends would clomp clomp clomp by me, my hand jammed in my mouth so they wouldn\u2019t hear my giggles,<\/p>\n<p><em>Hah! Undetected!<\/em><\/p>\n<h1>What if I was never found?<\/h1>\n<p>And then there was long silence. That was a good sign that I wouldn\u2019t be found. Nervously, I peeked out, secretly hoping for discovery. But in the recesses of my mind came questions, the doubt.\u00a0Did I do such a good job of getting lost, that I would never be found?\u00a0Would I ever be discovered? Would they go home and forget the hunt? Would anybody really care?<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDavid? I don\u2019t know where he is. Last I saw him, he was hiding somewhere.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a child it\u2019s a game. As an adult, it\u2019s a professional quest.\u00a0<strong><em>Some spend a whole lifetime getting lost<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong>And\u00a0they do everything they can to keep from getting found.<\/p>\n<p>I have a brother who has been on the run his whole life. I\u2019ve reached out in love, friendship and grace, only to have him pull his hand away in anger and hurt. For a long time, I didn\u2019t understand why he wouldn\u2019t want \u00a0to come home, following the bread crumbs of kindness.<em>Then I realized.<\/em>\u00a0He wanted to wrap himself in his own blanket of familiarity. \u201cLeave me alone.\u201d So I did. And so has every one else.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I still feel the guilt. Christ left the 99 to come chase me down, and yet I give up so easily.<\/p>\n<h1>I\u2019ve walked away<\/h1>\n<p>I\u2019ve been lost myself. My path was well-worn, trod by the generations before me and followed by my own sandals. Somewhere I walked away. It was one fork. And then another. And then another.
