According to the official website, extreme ironing is \u201cthe latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.\u201d<br>Part of the attraction and interest the media has towards extreme ironing seems to centre on the issue of whether it is really a sport or not. However, purists of the sport will claim that it was started in 1997 in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leicester\" title=\"Leicester\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Leicester<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East_Midlands\" title=\"East Midlands\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">East Midlands<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/England\" title=\"England\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">England<\/a> by resident Phil Shaw in his <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yard_(land)\" title=\"Yard (land)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">back garden<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_ironing#cite_note-Jazz-0\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>[<\/span>1<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> Shaw came home from what he recalls as a hard day in a Leicester <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Knit\" title=\"Knit\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">knitwear<\/a> factory.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_ironing#cite_note-4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>[<\/span>5<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> Preferring the idea of an evening out <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_climbing\" title=\"Rock climbing\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">rock climbing<\/a>, he decided to combine the two activities into a new extreme sport. In June 1999, Shaw, who uses the nickname \u201cSteam\u201d, embarked on an international tour to promote the activity. The stops included the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States\" title=\"United States\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">United States<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fiji\" title=\"Fiji\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Fiji<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Zealand\" title=\"New Zealand\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Zealand<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australia\" title=\"Australia\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Australia<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa\" title=\"South Africa\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">South Africa<\/a>. An encounter with German tourists in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Zealand\" title=\"New Zealand\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New Zealand<\/a> led to the formation of a group called \u201cExtreme Ironing International\u201d, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=German_Extreme_Ironing_Section&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" title=\"German Extreme Ironing Section (page does not exist)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>German Extreme Ironing Section<\/span><\/a> or GEIS.<br>As extreme ironing has branched off, the conditions can gain in extreme activity. For example a branch of ironing has been developed that includes both bungee jumping and well-pressed clothing. Bungee ironing is, what some would call, the ultimate in the thrill of extreme ironing.<br>The \u201csport\u201d gained international attention after a documentary entitled <i>Extreme Ironing: Pressing for Victory<\/i>, was produced for Britain\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Channel_4\" title=\"Channel 4\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Channel 4<\/a> by Wag TV. The program followed the British team\u2019s efforts and eventual Bronze and Gold placings in the first international extreme ironing contest in Germany. A side-story looked at the rivalry between the EIB (Extreme Ironing Bureau) and a breakaway group called <i>Urban Housework<\/i> who were trying to establish their own extreme sport based around vacuum-cleaning. The film later aired on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Geographic_Channel\" title=\"National Geographic Channel\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">National Geographic Channel<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_ironing#cite_note-Wollaston-3\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>[<\/span>4<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><br>In 2003 the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Rowenta&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\" title=\"Rowenta (page does not exist)\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>Rowenta<\/span><\/a> Trophy was won by a group from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/South_Africa\" title=\"South Africa\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">South Africa<\/a> by ironing across a gorge at the Wolfberg Cracks.<br>In 2004, the EIB traveled to the US on the Rowenta Tour to recruit additional ironists and ironed at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Rushmore\" title=\"Mount Rushmore\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mount Rushmore<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York\" title=\"New York\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">New York<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston\" title=\"Boston\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Boston<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Devils_Tower_National_Monument\" title=\"Devils Tower National Monument\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Devils Tower<\/a>.<br>In March 2008, a team of 72 divers simultaneously ironing underwater set a new world\u2019s record for number of people ironing underwater at once.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_ironing#cite_note-5\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>[<\/span>6<span>]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><br>On 10 January 2009, 128 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scuba_diving\" title=\"Scuba diving\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">divers<\/a> including 6 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Freediving\" title=\"Freediving\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">freedivers<\/a>, attempted to break the previous world record, managing to confirm 86 divers ironing within a 10 minute period. The event took place at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ndac.co.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">National Diving and Activity Centre (NDAC)<\/a> near <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chepstow\" title=\"Chepstow\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Chepstow<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gloucestershire\" title=\"Gloucestershire\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Gloucestershire<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_Kingdom\" title=\"United Kingdom\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">UK<\/a> and was organised by members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorkshire-divers.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">Yorkshire Divers<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Internet_forum\" title=\"Internet forum\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">internet forum<\/a>. The event is part of the Conch Republic Days in the Florida Keys and will be attempted by Keys Diver, Silent World Dive Center, and Captain Slates Atlantis Dive Center. According to the EIB, the characters made reference to the current altitude record holders. As the party loving Kat and Zoe Slater are preparing to go out, they are invited to the launch party at Angie\u2019s Den by a couple of \u201cmedia types\u201d. The pair say that there\u2019d be celebrities in the shape of the Hot Plate Brothers there.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Extreme_ironing#cite_note-11\" class=\" decorated-link\"
