For me, it started on Wednesday with my comment<\/a>, \u201cWe don\u2019t need technology. We need each other.\u201d\u00a0 Yesterday, there was quite a bit of discussion about How Smart Phones Make Us Dumb.<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n

Michelle DeRusha<\/strong> over at Graceful <\/strong><\/span>thinks<\/span><\/a> that\u00a0technology \u201cis changing the way my brain processes information. Perhaps permanently.\u201d <\/span>She <\/span>admits<\/span><\/a> that\u00a0she\u2019s on\u00a0the computer 15 or more hours each week, commenting, reading and surfing content.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Michelle is reading read The Shallows<\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/em>, by Nicholas Carr. He writes, \u201c<\/span>the more time we spend online, the less time we spend simply thinking, simply being. We fill our minutes and hours and days with mental detritus, leaving no room or time for the creativity, fulfillment and rejuvenation that comes with open space.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The idea of sitting on the front porch, just observing the world around us is lost without a radio, a smartphone, or an iPod to accompany us. <\/span><\/span>And Michelle is\u00a0afraid that all of this is having an affect on her memory, as she\u2019 s unable to retain information beyond a few hours \u2014 or minutes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Kara Chupp<\/strong><\/span> reviewed<\/span><\/a> the book, and concluded that her life is far too much about \u201cSkimming.\u201d She says that\u00a0she doesn\u2019t \u201cwant\u00a0to write, or read, or relate, or live in a place of superficiality.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>
Laura Lee Groves<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>sees the impact on her four children. The Internet \u201cisn\u2019t really suited for deep reading and concentration \u2014 two elements often associated with acquiring wisdom.\u201d She too read The Shallows<\/em><\/strong> and quoted this. \u201cAs our ability to multitask improves, we may \u201cbecome less creative in our thinking.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Do we have a place for creativity? For\u00a0careful thought and reasoning? For deep sea diving? <\/span>
