I squeezed my eyes tight, pushing the daylight out of every conceivable corner.\u00a0 I was convinced that it was right here, right now that God would speak.<\/span><\/div>\n
The setup was perfect. I was 17, gifted and on fire. I wanted to serve God\u2014anywhere, anyhow. I drove into a quiet spot in woods and set up a chair under a large aspen tree.\u00a0 I sat and waited for something \u2013 a voice. A bush.\u00a0 A finger writing on the white bark.<\/div>\n
Anything.<\/em><\/div>\n
\u201cWhat is your will? What should I do?\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n
<\/a><\/div>\n
I just needed a sign.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
I didn\u2019t get one that day.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t seem fair. After all Elijah got one. Moses, too.\u00a0 And even the disobedient Israelites. \u00a0And Thomas, full of doubts, got to touch the fresh wounds.<\/div>\n
God also ignored a few other tests I gave Him throughout life\u2014like when I asked Him to make the nickel come up five heads in a row to confirm my choice of a college. And the day I flipped open my worn New Testament, looking away while my finger pointed to a random verse to give me a signal. The list of methods I used is almost embarrassing.<\/div>\n
Any sincere believer has been there. That\u2019s why\u00a0David Platt<\/a>\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0chapter\u00a0God\u2019s Will for Your Life<\/em>\u00a0in his book\u00a0Follow Me\u00a0<\/a><\/em>is sure to help plenty of sincere\u2014but sincerely wrong\u2014believers who have tried all kinds of holy manipulation to understand just exactly what is the right course of action for their lives.<\/div>\n
He outlines an assortment of methods we have devised for finding the Will of God.<\/div>\n
\nThe astonishing miracle:\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0\u201cGod, cause this pencil to move across the table.<\/div>\n
\nThe striking coincidence:<\/em>\u00a0\u201c She\u2019s got an aunt in Idaho. My uncle loves potatoes. We both use Colgate. God has willed us to marry!\u201d<\/div>\n
\nThe Open Door:<\/em>\u00a0\u201cIf I send in my application for a Secret Service agent, and they accept me, despite my spotty criminal record, then that is your perfect will for me. \u201c<\/div>\n
\nCasting the Fleece:<\/em>\u00a0\u201cIf this $10 turns into a $50, then I\u2019ll go into missions.\u201d<\/div>\n
\nThe Still Small Voice:<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m listening. Wait is that you? Or is that a song from the radio playing in my head?\u201d<\/div>\n
Platt advances a line of logic that is strikingly simple. Yet, I find it hard to digest considering my lifelong quest for the Holy Grail of God\u2019s perfect will.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cWe operate as if God\u2019s will were lost,\u201d <\/i>he writes.\u00a0 \u201cWhat if He has already revealed it? What if God the Father has not sent his children on a cosmic Easter egg hunt?\u201d<\/i>\n<\/div>\n
Really, all of this is comical in a way, if it weren\u2019t so serious in its implications. Can you honestly imagine God, sitting back with a mischievous, knowing look on his face?\u00a0 \u201cWarmer. No Colder. Cooling. Getting warm. Red hot!\u00a0 You found it! You found my will.\u201d<\/i>\n<\/div>\n
It Was Right There All Along<\/strong><\/div>\n
Here\u2019s the will of God.\u00a0For us to surrender to Him.<\/em>\u00a0It\u2019s spelled out clearly in Scripture. He\u2019s never deviated from the principle. He\u2019s always rewarded those who pursue obedience.<\/div>\n
And the first act of clear obedience. \u201cGo and make disciples.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/div>\n
Suddenly, life just got a lot simpler. It\u2019s not a complicated road map full of twists, turns, and directionals. Instead, this walk is one of surrender. Oswald Chambers writes, \u201cThe only time a man will wonder where the path lies is when he is actually off the path.\u201d<\/div>\n
Why is the hunt for the will of God so elusive for so many?\u00a0Because we make it that way<\/em>, according to Platt.<\/div>\n
\u201cThe more we know God, and the more we walk in his will, the more we understand how foolish it is to think that he would ever want to hide it from us,\u201d he writes.<\/div>\n
Is it me, or was that a light bulb that suddenly illuminated over my head?<\/div>\n
