He would die in the same manner.<\/p>\n<p>Last night we went a traditional <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Las_Posadas\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Las Posadas<\/a> festival. Celebrated throughout Mexico it gives a unique cultural twist on the familiar story. \u00a0It\u2019s a celebration that dates back to 1587.<\/p>\n<p>The capstone of the multi-day event reenacts two children dressed as Joseph and Mary knocking on multiple doors with each homeowner sending the couple on their way.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"La Posadas Morrison Colorado 2016\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uzN8gQzsP6A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>A devil, dressed in mask and a red shawl dances on roof of each home, dancing in victory over every rejection. The gathered crowd boos and hisses at the satanic figure.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2016\/12\/IMG_20161225_102458.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2890\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2890 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2016\/12\/IMG_20161225_102458-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_20161225_102458\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, a door opens and Joseph and Mary are ushered into a stable where Jesus is born.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the ceremony, candles are lit, songs are sung with corresponding responsive readings.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s beautiful, rich in imagery and hope.<\/p>\n<p>The entire ceremony is capped with a Christmas pi\u00f1ata. Yes, that was a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>But even the pi\u00f1ata has meaning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2016\/12\/Christmas-Pinata.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2886\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2886 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2016\/12\/Christmas-Pinata-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas Pinata\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pi\u00f1ata has seven points, each representing one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seven_deadly_sins\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">seven cardinal sins<\/a> \u2013 <em>Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>bright colors<\/strong> represent attraction we feel for those temptations.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>candy<\/strong> represents grace.<\/p>\n<p>And the young person swinging the broomstick is <strong>blindfolded,<\/strong> which represents faith.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>stick <\/strong>represents God and cheering <strong>crowd <\/strong>represents the witnesses, the church cheering the person standing up to sin.<\/p>\n<p>Before striking the pi\u00f1ata, the young person is turned around 33 times in remembrance of the 33 years of Jesus\u2019 life.<\/p>\n<p>As child after child took their swings, I doubt they understood the significance of the pi\u00f1ata. They just wanted the candy. \u00a0I was particularly amused by the designated Joseph, still wearing his tape on beard, who took a wicked swing at the pi\u00f1ata. And sweet little Mary was in the mix too, her jaw squared and eyes narrow as she took a swing.<\/p>\n<p>Once the pi\u00f1ata burst, the children swarmed the candy, a pile of humanity. \u00a0I\u2019m sure there\u2019s an application to that as well.<\/p>\n<p>But I love the idea of Christmas pi\u00f1ata.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes meaningless repetition is found in tradition.
