Custom meats. \u00a0Craft breweries. \u00a0Some of this is the result of the entrepreneurship spirit that is sweeping America\u2019s millennials. Whether it\u2019s starting a business on Etsy or eBay or opening a food truck, the desire for self-determination is a trend that is helping drive this change in occupations.<\/div>\n<div class=\"hero__content hero__content--center\"><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"vp-xs-top-4\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2017\/09\/eddy-klaus-33079.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3231\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3231 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2017\/09\/eddy-klaus-33079-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Photo by Eddy Klaus on Unsplash\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo by Eddy Klaus on Unsplash<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eig.org\/millennial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">EY\/EIG survey<\/a>\u00a0on the Millennial Economy helps us understand what\u2019s going on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>62 percent of millennials \u201chave considered starting their own business.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>78 percent of survey respondents who know someone that has launched or worked for a startup consider that person successful.<\/li>\n<li>72 percent feel that startups and entrepreneurship are \u201cessential for promoting innovation and jobs.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s popular, almost revered to \u201cstart your own thing\u201d and make a go of it.<\/p>\n<h3><b>Drawn to the simple<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Denver Institute for Faith and Work\u2019s Director of Events and Sponsorships Joanna Meyer teaches part-time at a local craft center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see a lot of people coming in who had grandmothers who sewed and they realize that\u2019s something that they would like to learn,\u201d she said. \u201cKnitting, crocheting and making their own yarn is all part of a new do-it-yourself movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resurgence in old crafts is in part driven by over-commercialization and a revolt against a homogenized retail world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are drawn to the simple,\u201d said Joanna. \u201cWith the crafts, you can connect to the source. Plus you make something, customize it and call it \u2018yours.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor anyone who has ever learned a new craft, there is a joy in the simple, pure, unadulterated creative process. We embrace the raw materials that God has given us and what we can do with them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The craftsman isn\u2019t just the person who is carving a table. It\u2019s simply a realization that we all want to have a connection to the people who provide our goods and services.<\/p>\n<p>Chris Kilcullen of Evergreen,CO, \u00a0is the Founder of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibuy4jobs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">IBuy4Jobs.com<\/a>, a think-tank dedicated to educated source purchasing. \u00a0He believes knowing where our goods and services come from is increasingly important to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur economy is so big that we have lost touch with each other. We are looking for those personal connections again,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to touch the community, the people I live and work with. When you think about your friends who own a restaurant, you want to do everything you can to support them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris calls it an economy with consequences. \u201cI want to help my friends, my neighbors, my customers because it ripples back through the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why even the largest grocery chains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/usatoday30.usatoday.com\/money\/economy\/2008-10-27-local-grown-farms-produce_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">are devoting<\/a>\u00a0more and more space to locally grown products.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why consumers are\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/business\/article\/0,8599,1903632,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">willing to spend<\/a>\u00a0more money to support local businesses.<\/p>\n<p>And there is no better connection to people than the artist\/businessperson who is offering a product that they have created.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><b>The personal touch<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Jobs that impact people on a personal level are \u00a0in vogue again.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the observation that Princeton Professor Dr. Richard Ocejo makes in \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/press.princeton.edu\/titles\/10960.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\" decorated-link\">Masters of Craft: Old Jobs in the New Urban Economy.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese trades are based in using your hands, with actual tools and materials, to provide a tangible concrete product,\u201d he writes. \u00a0\u201cPeople are seeking technical skills based on a renewed sense of craft and craftsmanship\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And these jobs also give an opportunity to resonate at the human level.<\/p>\n<p>The baristas at the local coffee shop know the names of their regulars \u2013 and probably more than a few details of their lives. The tattooed butcher at the new locally-sourced meat shop is flashing his knives and his smile while talking to waiting customers.<\/p>\n<p>When I choose someone to work on my house, I always turn to the family business when I can. This comes from my own upbringing, as my father was a roofer for five decades. He worked alone and I know firsthand the struggles of living in a household subject to the winds of big business vs. the little guy.<\/p>\n<p>I used that selection process when I recently replaced my garage door, the old one battered by hail. The 29 year-old who installed my door was a true professional, wedging the door into perfect fit despite some challenging architectural barriers.<\/p>\n<p>We chatted over his lunch, a peanut butter sandwich packed in a soft, insulated bag.<\/p>\n<p>He told me that he went to college, studying \u201cinformation technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy guidance counselor told me the future was in data,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I what I really wanted was to work with my hands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He couldn\u2019t be happier.<\/p>\n<p>He also loves the people contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work on 3-4 doors a day,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I always make people happy. That\u2019s a good way to go home at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3247\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3247\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2017\/09\/welding-01.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3247\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-3247\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/580\/2017\/09\/welding-01-1024x571.png\" alt=\"Photo by Chris Fritsche\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3247\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo by Chris Fritsche<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>The desire to create<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Peter Wanberg, the founder of Denver\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jubileeroastingco.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\" decorated-link\">Jubilee Roasting Company<\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t necessary pick coffee. He has degrees in Human Resource Management and Marketing, a business school pedigree that would make him an ideal candidate for the corporate world.<\/p>\n<p>But ultimately, he found his calling in beans, which he believes is an outgrowth of a creative bent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pursued art throughout college and it shaped my thinking, even in business,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n<p>He always loved coffee, but never really imagined throwing himself into the art of the roast.<\/p>\n<p>Somehow it all came together when he came across an opportunity to use a warehouse space in Aurora for a caf\u00e9. But to make the unused warehouse space pay its way, he began producing larger amounts of the coffee that could be distributed.<\/p>\n<p>Peter\u2019s draw to the craft is motivated by his desire to follow God\u2019s call to \u201ccreate well and be good neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are created to further create, build, and to extend God\u2019s creation.
