I\u2019m honored to share this space with Margaret Feinberg<\/b>, a writer who has a sense of the Divine on this earthly plane. Expect the Unexpected: Discovering the Wonder of God in Your Workplace<\/span><\/h1>\n

A few months ago, I lost my driver\u2019s license. The replacement required me to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV\u2019s can be some of the most lifeless places marked by long lines of people (like myself) who feel wildly inconvenienced by having to take a number and wait for hours to receive a government issued ID. My trip to the DMV was no exception.<\/div>\n
Grey walls. Crowded waiting room. Stale air.<\/div>\n
I took a ticket, number 162, and winced. The flashing red light read 76. I settled into one of the plastic, hardback chairs.<\/div>\n
One particular employee, the woman taking license photos, caught my attention. I watched as she carefully said each person\u2019s name, inviting the person to pose for a photo. She called people by name in a gentle but firm way that felt warm and carried an expression of dignity.<\/div>\n
She greeted each person with a warm smile, and asked the person to stand in front of the camera. To the aging 50-something woman, she encouraged, \u201cYou\u2019ve still got your beauty.\u201d To the awkward self-conscious teenager, she leaned in, \u201cShow me that beautiful smile.\u201d<\/div>\n
One woman appeared particularly distraught, and I watched as this worker comforted her. At one point she came out from behind the counter to give her a hug and encouragement. \u201cYou\u2019re gonna get through this,\u201d I overheard her say.<\/div>\n
I sat wonderstruck. Right in the DMV, I was witnessing the love and compassion of Christ. This woman was touching thousands of lives as she worked. Armed only with a camera and compassion, she radiated a joy that transformed the atmosphere of the room.<\/div>\n
Through this stranger, God reminded me of the importance of living with divine expectation. One of the great things we can expect of God is the unexpected.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
What if\u2026 what could be dismissed as a detour or inconvenience or excess workload is actually an invitation to experience the wonder of God?<\/span><\/div>\n
What if\u2026 that next project positions you to deliver the precise word of kindness or encouragement a person needs?<\/div>\n
What if\u2026 the person waiting by the coffee pot really needs someone to talk to you\u2014and God has sent you?<\/div>\n
What if\u2026 like the woman at the DMV, God is doing more in and through you right where you are than you ever imagined?<\/div>\n
Spend some time today reflecting on how God wants to use you right in your workplace. How can you begin living with a greater sense of divine expectation in your 9 to 5? Who is God sending you today\u2014among clients and coworkers\u2014on whom you can lavish the love of God?<\/div>\n
