{"id":64,"date":"2012-12-01T23:17:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-02T06:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.195.124.95\/~redletu4\/chasing-the-wind\/"},"modified":"2012-12-01T23:17:00","modified_gmt":"2012-12-02T06:17:00","slug":"chasing-the-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/davidrupert\/chasing-the-wind\/","title":{"rendered":"chasing the wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>Chasing the Wind<\/b><\/div>\n<div><i>The Search for Meaning in a Meaningless World\n<\/i><p><\/p><\/div>\n<div>Replacing God<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Intro<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I am constantly on the look out for people that I can relate to.\u00a0 I smile when I see a guy reach over and begin nibbling on his wife\u2019s dessert.\u00a0 I have a link to the person who catches a nap during a boring meeting.\u00a0\u00a0 I can relate to the man who walks through a mall like he is a death march.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Bill Murray \u2013 Groundhog Day \u2014 reporter covering the same story everyyear of the famous ground hog in\u00a0\u00a0 name Punxsutawney comes from the Indian name for the location<br>\u201cponksad-uteney\u201d If the sun came out February 2, halfway between Winter and Spring, it meant six more weeks of wintry weather. : You want a prediction about the \u201c I\u2019ll give you a winter prediction: It\u2019s gonna be cold, it\u2019s gonna be grey, and it\u2019s gonna last you for the rest of your life\u201d.\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Would he see his shadow.\u00a0 The next morning he awakens to find that the calander is stuck.\u00a0 Everyday is groundhog day.\u00a0 He has the same conversations, the same events, everyday is the same.\u00a0 I can relate to this.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I recently found someone in the Bible that I can really relate to.<\/div>\n<div>This man just wanted to stay in bed.<\/div>\n<div>He simply did not want to face the rat cage of life<\/div>\n<div>He wondered if life was worth the battle<\/div>\n<div>He questioned the worth of it all<\/div>\n<div>He didn\u2019t want to face the world because he didn\u2019t think it mattered<\/div>\n<div>It isn\u2019t just a mid-life malady or a teenage curse or a senior moment.<\/div>\n<div>It is a broad brush that is painted across all of our lives.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i>Eccl 1:1\u00a0 The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:\n<\/i><p><\/p><\/div>\n<div><i>Eccl 1:2\u00a0 \u201cMeaningless! Meaningless!\u201d says the Teacher. \u201cUtterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless\n<\/i><p><\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Vanity of Vanities<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>King Solomon penned the book of Ecclesiastes.\u00a0 He experienced the same inner demons that plague all of us. \u00a0He fought to find purpose and meaning.\u00a0 He looked for that purpose in the world systems, in learning and in accomplishment.\u00a0 He looked for that meaning in his vast empire.\u00a0 He looked for purpose in relationships and pleasure.\u00a0 What he was really looking for was a replacement,thats right, a replacement for God.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>It was Pascal who noted that we all have a God shaped vacuum..Mankind spends his existence trying to fill the ache, to fill the empty void in his life.\u00a0 \n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Like Solomon, We are Looking for God in all the wrong places<\/div>\n<div>We are looking for satisfaction , for meaning in the wrong things<\/div>\n<div>When we seek to replace God, I believe it is usually in one of four ways.<\/div>\n<div>These four ways consume our passions, possess our minds and grip our efforts.<\/div>\n<div>These four ways are the paths that lead us away from God and closer to hell.<\/div>\n<div>Solomon tested each of these four ways.\u00a0\u00a0 Would they last?\u00a0 Would they stand up? Would they bring lasting satisfaction?\u00a0 Lets share in the results of\u00a0 his experiment in trying to replace God.<\/div>\n<div>\n<br><b>1)\u00a0 The first way we try to replace God is through Work<\/b>\n<\/div>\n<div>An American businessman was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large Yellow fin tuna.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish\u00a0 and asked how long it took to catch them. The Mexican replied only a little while.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>The American then asked why didn\u2019t he stay out longer and catch more fish?<\/div>\n<div>The Mexican said he had enough to support his family\u2019s immediate needs.<\/div>\n<div>he American then asked, but what do you do with the rest of your time?<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>The Mexican fisherman said, \u201cI sleep late, fish a little,\u00a0\u00a0 play with my children,\u00a0 take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos,\u00a0 I have a full and busy life, senor.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>The American scoffed,\u00a0 \u201cI am a Harvard MBA and could help you.\u00a0 You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds buy a bigger boat, with the proceeds from the bigger boat\u00a0 you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats.\u00a0 Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery.\u00a0 You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City,\u00a0 then LA and eventually NYC\u00a0 where you will run your expanding enterprise.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>The Mexican fisherman asked, \u201cBut senor, how long will this all take?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>To which the American replied, 15-20 years.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cBut what then, senor?\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>The American laughed and said,\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s the best part. When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div>\u201cMillions, senor?\u00a0 Then what?\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The American said, \u201cThen you would retire.\u00a0 Move to a small coastal fishing village\u00a0 where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids,\u00a0 take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings<\/div>\n<div>where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Solomon Writes:<\/div>\n<div><i><span>Eccl 2:17\u00a0 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span>\u00a0Eccl 2:22\u00a0 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun?\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div><i><span>Eccl 2:23\u00a0 All his days his work is pain and grief; even at night his mind does not rest. This too is meaningless.<\/span><\/i><\/div>\n<div>Are you looking for fulfillment in your job, in your profession, in your occupation?<\/div>\n<div>Is your work what Identifies you?<\/div>\n<div>I promise you, it will leave you longing for more.<\/div>\n<div>The Post Office is a poor substitute for God<\/div>\n<div>If work frustrate you \u2014 good \u2014look to God for satisfaction instead.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>2)\u00a0 The second way we try to replace God is through Money<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A very successful lawyer parked his brand new Jaguar in front t of his office, ready to show it off to his colleagues.\u00a0 As he was getting out of the car, a truck came too close and completely tore the drivers door off the Jag.\u00a0 Very soon a policeman arrived , but before he could do anything, the lawyer was screaming hysterically.\u00a0 His brand new Jag, just one day old, was wrecked and probably would never be the same and why didn\u2019t the policeman do something about it.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>After the lawyer finally wound down form his rant, the cop shook his head in disgust and disbelief.\u00a0 He said \u201cI can\u2019t believe how materialistic you lawyers are.\u00a0 You are so focused on your possessions that you didn\u2019t even notice that your left arm is missing from the elbow down?\u00a0 It must have tore off when the truck hit you.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The lawyer looked down.\u00a0 \u201cMy God\u201d he screamed, \u201cMy Rolex!\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Solomon writes:<\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:7\u00a0 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:8\u00a0 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I don\u2019t care how much you have, you want more<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Its the american way\u2013 we are consumers first.\u00a0 Humans second.<\/div>\n<div>Are you looking for meaning within the clutches of money?<br>Are you looking for a replacement for God in the dollars in your account, in your investments, in your possessions your retirement<\/div>\n<div>They will rust, rot and never fill you up.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It is no surpruise that shopping has become modern Americans God of sorts.\u00a0 The accumulation of possessions is the way we find fulfillment.\u00a0 The brands we buy establish our sense of belonging with a paticular social group.\u00a0 Our possessions define our identitty.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The ancient and modern myth is that just a little more will be just enough<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>3)\u00a0 The third way we try to replace God is through Achievement And its Twin Power<\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I have recently read the book \u201cInto Thin Air\u201d about a fatal ascent of Mount Everest.\u00a0\u00a0 The writer chronicles the climbing profession and how each of the enthusiasts try to one up the others.\u00a0 They try to climb the peaks the fastest, or they take new paths, or climb multiple peaks in successive months. They try using primitive equipment and leave the oxygen tanks at home.\u00a0 They are constantly reaching for the most outlandish, the most outrageous, t he most breathtaking ascent of every mountain.\u00a0 And yet , still they are not satisfied.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:4\u00a0 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:5\u00a0 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:6\u00a0 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:9\u00a0 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div>What is the emphasis in these verses?<\/div>\n<div>I amassed.\u00a0 I became. I bought. I was. I did.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He realizes in verse 11 that all the things that he did amounted to little more than a hill of beans.\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div><b><i><span>Eccl 2:11\u00a0 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You see, our society places great emphasis on human accomplishment.\u00a0 We have over 1700 institutions of higher learning in our country<\/div>\n<div>And yet, I can name the truly intelligent people in my life on one hand.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We have massive inter states, water systems , telephone links, microwave relays and space shuttles <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We have All the modern conveniences and yet not one of these has touched my heart when I am sad<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>No sport, no pleasure, no endeavor will replace your need for a Savior.\u00a0 Nothing can possibly supplant your inner desire for God.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When we try to fill the ache, the void with things that are not from above, with the impermanent, with the transient, we are ultimately frustrated.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>4)\u00a0 The fourth way we try to replace God is through the Pursuit of Pleasure<\/b><\/div>\n<div>Chuck Colson calls Hedonism one of the four horsemen of the age.\u00a0\u00a0 Hedonism is the endless devotion to pleasure.\u00a0 This aptly describes our present culture.\u00a0\u00a0 We are pleasure seekers.\u00a0\u00a0 From our cars, to our homes , to our hobbies to our sports to our clothes to our sexual appetite to our food to our drugs and alcohol \u2014- we are hopelessly addicted to pleasure<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><i>Eccl 2:1\u00a0 I thought in my heart, \u201cCome now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.\u201d But that also proved to be meaningless.\n<\/i><p><\/p><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>But the problem with pleasure is that it is fleeting.\u00a0 \n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Society tells us that we will be full only when restraint is thrown to the wind\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>Something we have all learned is that freedom without any restraint is indeed a cruel a task master \u2014 it burdens and enslaves us\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span>We cannot eat at the buffett table, gorging ourselves, without coming away feeling a little strange\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So how is your life?<\/div>\n<div>Do you feel the ache<\/div>\n<div>Do you feel the void<\/div>\n<div>Are you frustrated and empty by life\u2019s pursuit<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><span>True\u00a0 meaning and purpose is found in God.\u00a0 Anything short of this realization is a chasing after the wind.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>God is the one who fills every craving, every longing<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Invest in eternity<\/div>\n<div>Turn your pursuits over to the Almighty<\/div>\n<div>Invest your thoughts, your passions, your desires in the Eternal clutches of Your Saviors<\/div>\n<div>By turning your vain race over to Jesus Christ you will benefit from his sacrifice that was made for you.<\/div>\n<div>He died so you quit running<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 quit striving<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 quit working<\/div>\n<div>He died so you can be free<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>End of Ecclesiastes <b><span>Eccl 12:13-14 NIV)\u00a0 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.\n<p><\/p><\/span><\/b>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>You can find purpose and meaning once again<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chasing the Wind The Search for Meaning in a Meaningless World Replacing God Intro I am constantly on the look out for people that I can relate to.\u00a0 I smile when I see a guy reach over and begin nibbling on his wife\u2019s dessert.\u00a0 I have a link to the person who catches a nap [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2375,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-64","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
