Over 4,000 people flocked to the Archdiocese of Denver for\u00a0its annual \u201cLiving the Catholic Faith Conference\u201d held this year from March 2-3.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>The two-day conference \u2013 which began as a forum for Catholic educators and has only recently opened\u00a0 to the public \u2013 featured Justice Antonin Scalia and noted scientist Br. Guy Consolmango as keynote speakers.<\/p>\n

James Cavanaugh, director of Evangelization and Catechisis for the archdiocese, told CNA that organizers added a Spanish Track and \u201cinvited speakers that would appeal to a broader audience\u201d in order to reach as many Catholics in the area as possible.<\/p>\n

This year was the most attended in the history of the conference, with about 1,500 participants for the Spanish Track and over 1,000 for the Teen Track, which was introduced for the first time in 2012.<\/p>\n

During his address, Justice Scalia addressed a large crowd about how Christians are perceived as \u201ccretins\u201d or people of insufficient mental capabilities by \u201csophisticated society.\u201d<\/p>\n

St. Thomas More was a \u201cprime example\u201d of \u201cthe Christian as cretin\u201d during his life in the 16th century, Scalia said. Although many martyrs before him died for \u201cnoble\u201d causes such as refusing to deny Jesus or for spreading the Gospel, More \u2013 according to his peers \u2013 died for a papacy that was \u201ccorrupt and politicized.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut of course,\u201d Scalia reminded the crowd, \u201cMore was not seeing with the eyes of men, but with the eyes of faith.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe went to his death,\u201d Scalia said, for refusing to reject Christ\u2019s teaching that \u201conly the Pope could bind and loose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scalia reminded conference attendees that the mentality is not new to the modern era and cited the story of St. Paul trying to evangelize the Athenians in Acts of the Apostles, but having no success due to their refusal to believe that Christ rose from the dead.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe \u2018wise\u2019 men of Athens circa AD 50 know just as well as the men of America AD 2012 that people don\u2019t rise from the dead,\u201d Scalia said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
