It happened last week in New Mexico.\u00a0Details:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

A former Albuquerque city councilor filed a lawsuit this week alleging that he was wrongfully fired from CHI St. Joseph\u2019s Children because he is not Catholic \u201cand supports a woman\u2019s right to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former City Councilor Miguel G\u00f3mez contends that problems began for him in 2013 after the nonprofit\u2019s president and CEO, Allen Sanchez, quizzed G\u00f3mez\u2019s mother about her son\u2019s religious beliefs.<\/p>\n

G\u00f3mez\u2019s mother is Evangelical Christian and did not have her son baptized as a Roman Catholic, which Sanchez found offensive, the lawsuit contends.<\/p>\n

G\u00f3mez filed the lawsuit Thursday against CHI St. Joseph\u2019s Children, a nonprofit advocacy group for New Mexico children, and Sanchez, who is also is the executive director of the New Mexico Council of Catholic Bishops.<\/p>\n

\u2026G\u00f3mez contends that he was wrongfully fired because St. Joseph\u2019s is not affiliated with the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and is subject to state and federal labor laws that prohibit discrimination on the basis of religion.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit also claims that G\u00f3mez was defamed because Sanchez told \u201ca prominent and well-respected official\u201d that G\u00f3mez was fired because he tried to pressure a St. Joseph\u2019s employee to have an abortion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
