{"id":1261,"date":"2011-01-23T07:05:31","date_gmt":"2011-01-23T12:05:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/deaconsbench\/?p=1261"},"modified":"2016-09-30T17:47:54","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T21:47:54","slug":"lambs-of-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2011\/01\/lambs-of-god\/","title":{"rendered":"Lambs of God"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>If you\u2019ve ever wondered just where the wool comes from that is used for the pallium, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholicnews.com\/data\/stories\/cns\/1100254.htm?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RealClearReligion+%28Real+Clear+Religion%29\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">CNS has the answer<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,Helvetica;font-size: small\">Certain things \u2014 such as a bath  and getting dressed up \u2014 are universal before a personal meeting with  the pope, and the rule holds even for lambs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/56\/2011\/01\/lamb.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1262\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/56\/2011\/01\/lamb-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a>As he does every year, Pope Benedict XVI blessed two little lambs Jan.  21, the feast of St. Agnes.<\/p>\n<p>Raised by Trappist monks on the outskirts of Rome, the lambs spent the  night before their papal audience in the center of Rome on the rooftop  terrace of the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, interviewed Holy Family  Sister Hanna Pomnianowska about her convent\u2019s role in the ancient  tradition which makes a connection between the name of St. Agnes, an  early Christian martyr, and \u201cagnus,\u201d the Latin word for lamb.<\/p>\n<p>The wool of the lambs blessed on the feast day is woven by a different  community of nuns and becomes the fabric for the \u201cpallium,\u201d a circular  stole, which the pope gives each June to new archbishops from around the  world.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Pomnianowska said her order got involved in 1884 when a group of  elderly sisters living nearby could no longer handle the task of  preparing the lambs to attend a Mass and then be blessed by the pope.<\/p>\n<p>She said that as soon as the Trappists arrive with the lambs, \u201cwe take  them to the top floor of our house, where we have a large terrace and  laundry room.
