The \u201cNorms Regarding the Manner of Proceeding in the Discernment of Presumed Apparitions or Revelations\u201d have been in use since 1978, but until now had been available only in Latin, never officially published and only circulated among bishops and specialists.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

The Vatican document has now been translated into English and other languages to aid bishops in the \u201cdifficult task of discerning presumed apparitions, revelations, messages or \u2026 extraordinary phenomena of presumed supernatural origin,\u201d Cardinal William Levada, the head of the Vatican doctrinal office, wrote in a companion letter last December that was published only recently on the Vatican website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The norms mandate that the local bishop must conduct a \u201cserious investigation\u201d to ascertain, with \u201cat least great probability,\u201d whether the Marian apparition effectively took place.<\/p>\n

The rules also require an evaluation of the \u201cpersonal qualities\u201d of the alleged seer, including his or her \u201cpsychological equilibrium,\u201d \u2018\u2019rectitude of moral life\u201d and \u201cdocility towards Ecclesiastical Authority.\u201d The contents of the \u201crevelation\u201d must be \u201cimmune\u201d from theological error, and the apparition must bear \u201cabundant\u2026 spiritual fruit,\u201d such as conversions.<\/p>\n

The authenticity of the vision should be rejected if, among other factors, the alleged seer shows \u201cpsychological disorder\u201d or \u201cevidence of a search for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI appointed a high-level commission to evaluate the authenticity of the controversial Marian apparitions in Medjugorje, Bosnia, which have been attracting tens of thousands of pilgrims for years despite opposition from local bishops.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
