Most of the attention yesterday was focused on his remarks on immigration, but the Christian Post<\/a><\/strong> takes up another angle:<\/p>\n

Sen.\u00a0Marco Rubio<\/strong> (R-Fla.) said he felt \u201ccalled\u201d to leave the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints<\/a> (LDS), or Mormon Church<\/a>, to join the Catholic Church in a Sunday interview on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rubio \u2013 who is currently being considered as a vice presidential nominee by Republican presidential candidate Mitt\u00a0Romney<\/a>, who is a Mormon \u2013 explained that his mother decided to join the LDS Church<\/a> after the family moved to Las Vegas when Rubio was eight years old. Some of Rubio\u2019s relatives were, and still are, members of the LDS Church, so the family had some familiarity with the church through them.<\/p>\n

His mother wanted a \u201cwholesome environment to raise\u201d her family, Rubio said, and she was \u201ca big admirer\u201d of the \u201cfamily-friendly\u00a0environment<\/a>\u201d within the LDS Church.<\/p>\n

Rubio explained that he decided to leave the LDS Church and join the Catholic Church four years later. It was one of two occasions in his life when he had been \u201ccalled back\u201d to the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor spiritual reasons, when I was about 12 years old, I started feeling called back to the Catholic Church and it was nothing against the Mormon Church, it was just a calling, that\u2019s happened twice in my life,\u201d Rubio said.<\/p>\n

Rubio, whose parents immigrated to the United States from Cuba, wrote a book about his life, published last week, called\u00a0An American Son: A Memoir<\/em>. Rubio\u2019s religious faith is one of the book\u2019s topics, he mentioned.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
