My blog neighbor The Anchoress looks at all the fuss <\/a><\/strong>kicked up about Leah Libresco and draws some compelling conclusions: <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Why so much coverage on Leah? Perhaps the answer is this:<\/strong> Leah\u2019s conversion goes against\u00a0all<\/em> of the prevailing narratives that dominate secularist thinking. Religion \u2014 or at least religion that goes beyond affirming oneself and\u00a0actually costs something<\/strong><\/a> of one \u2014 is the \u201copiate of the masses\u201d suited only to \u201cbitter clingers\u201d and intellectually-dim peasants (except\u00a0it isn\u2019t<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0never was<\/strong><\/a>); Leah is a brainy, sophisticated Yalie who is neither bitter, clingy nor dim. Catholicism \u201chates women\u201d (except\u00a0it doesn\u2019t<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0never did<\/strong><\/a>) and Leah is a strongly self-possessed, forward-thinking woman. Catholicism \u201chates homosexual persons\u201d (except\u00a0it doesn\u2019t<\/strong><\/a> and\u00a0never has<\/strong><\/a> although a new apostolic letter might help make that clear) and Leah identifies as bi-sexual.<\/p>\n

Wait a second\u2026hold on<\/strong>, I think I\u2019ve got it! Really smart\u2026female\u2026bi-sexual-identifying. Holy smokes! Leah Libresco has pulled off a narrative-busting Trifecta! She\u2019s a secularist thoroughbred who has nevertheless won the Triple Crown of Cultural Incongruity!<\/p>\n

No wonder the press is so interested in Leah Libresco. What a thoroughly odd puzzle she must be, to them. And if she had to become a Christian, why not at least an Episcopalian, which is and always has been, the acceptable church of the elite? Why must she mess with narratives and perceptions like some kind of Plato-mystic canoodler?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
