{"id":15083,"date":"2012-07-08T13:18:19","date_gmt":"2012-07-08T19:18:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/?p=15083"},"modified":"2016-09-30T17:06:26","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T21:06:26","slug":"there-is-misogyny-in-the-church-women-are-angry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2012\/07\/there-is-misogyny-in-the-church-women-are-angry\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;There is misogyny in the church&#8230;women are angry!&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>In an interview sure to raise eyebrows \u2014 and blood pressures \u2014 one of the most prominent Catholic lay women at the Vatican, \u00a0<em>L\u2019Osservatore Romano<\/em> contributor Lucetta Scaraffia, has opened up about the role of women in the Church, and she doesn\u2019t hold back.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/women-in-church-are-angry-losservatores.html%20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Whispers: <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15084\" title=\"lucsc\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2012\/07\/lucsc.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\">In an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/news\/world\/301503\/women-the-answer-for-scandal-hit-vatican\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">interview with\u00a0Agence France-Presse<\/a> published yesterday, Scaraffia (left) amplified points she first aired in a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/2010\/03\/vatican-daily-on-abuse-where-were-women.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2010\u00a0L\u2019Osservatore piece<\/a> \u2014 namely, that the lack of women in positions of ecclesial decision-making helped give rise to, among other things, the scope and depth of the church\u2019s sex-abuse scandals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pedophilia scandal was almost exclusively male,\u201d Scaraffia told the wire\u2019s Jean-Louis de la Vaissiere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there had been women in positions of power,\u201d she said, \u201cthey would not have allowed those things to happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen have long been reputed as sexually dangerous. But it\u2019s clear that the danger\u201d of abuse and its mishandling by church officials \u201clay with men and children,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the sit-down, Scaraffia spoke of what\u00a0AFP\u00a0termed a \u201clonely battle,\u201d saying that, in some parts of the Curial world, \u201cThe indifference is terrible\u2026. There is misogyny in the church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a closed world, caught up with issues of power. Many in the clergy are afraid that if women come onto the scene there will be less room for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not possible to go on like this,\u201d she said. \u201cWomen in the Church are angry!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While similar critiques have tended to fire away at the Man in White, however, the columnist praised Pope Benedict, saying that the pontiff \u2014 who has\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/2007\/02\/anything-other-than-secondary-all-popes.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">long relied on women<\/a> as key collaborators behind-the-scenes \u2014 \u201chas the courage to see things as they are\u201d in tackling the crises facing the church, whether the long trail of abuse or the Vatican\u2019s recent fiasco over the leaking of confidential documents.<\/p>\n<p>As opposed to an approach that \u201calways covered scandals up,\u201d Scaraffia said Benedict \u201clets them come to light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While \u201cmany people believe it is better to hide things,\u201d for Benedict, \u201cthe church is not protected by silence,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The Pope \u201cthinks that, for purification, there needs to be shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, however, that \u201cif there were women with authority in the church, nothing would be leaked.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/whispersintheloggia.blogspot.com\/2012\/07\/women-in-church-are-angry-losservatores.html%20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read more. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In an interview sure to raise eyebrows \u2014 and blood pressures \u2014 one of the most prominent Catholic lay women at the Vatican, \u00a0L\u2019Osservatore Romano contributor Lucetta Scaraffia, has opened up about the role of women in the Church, and she doesn\u2019t hold back.
