One was for coconut macaroons. \u201cMakes about 22,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15115\" title=\"ephron-oped-pic2-copy-blogSmallInline-v2\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2012\/07\/ephron-oped-pic2-copy-blogSmallInline-v2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"210\">That would not have been enough to serve the 800 or so people who attended a memorial on Monday for the writer and filmmaker Nora Ephron, who made hits like \u201cSleepless in Seattle\u201d and \u201cWhen Harry Met Sally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the recipe in the program reminded the crowd that Ms. Ephron loved cooking \u2014 and that she wrote and directed \u201cJulie &amp; Julia,\u201d the 2009 film about a blogger who makes every one of Julia Child\u2019s recipes in \u201cMastering the Art of French Cooking.\u201d Ms. Ephron,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/27\/movies\/nora-ephron-essayist-screenwriter-and-director-dies-at-71.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">who died on June 26<\/a> of pneumonia brought on by acute myeloid leukemia, was also listed as a producer of that film.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Ephron had planned the memorial herself, filing the plans in a folder marked \u201cexit.\u201d The program turned out to be poignant at times and uproarious at times, and there were frequent food references \u2014 to her roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, for example, and to the collection of at least 10 kinds of jam that she kept in the refrigerator. And, according to her son Max, her resistance to having Thanksgiving dinner early in the day. \u201cWe always had it at 7, like civilized people,\u201d he said\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u00a0There was talk of the people Nora Ephron knew. \u201cFor most of us,\u201d said another speaker, Richard Cohen, a columnist for The Washington Post, \u201cNora was one degree of separation. Nora not only knew everybody, she read everything. If I had a book, she had the galleys. If I had the galleys, she had the manuscript. If I had the manuscript, she knew the author. If you wanted to read the book before she did, you had to go to the printing plant in Kentucky or someplace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Cohen said that as Ms. Ephron\u2019s film career took off, he took on a \u201cpublic persona\u201d as a friend of hers. \u201cOnce, Vanity Fair called and asked what Nora would have done if she had not become a movie director and I said, \u2018Easy. Dictator of Argentina,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cWhen the magazine appeared, Nora called and said, \u2018You know, Richard, not everything you say is funny.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meryl Streep, who starred in \u201cJulie &amp; Julia,\u201d said that talking about Ms. Ephron was a difficult assignment. \u201cHow do you talk about a friend who said everything you wished you could say, everything you wanted to say in the world, but better and shorter and funnier?\u201d Ms. Streep asked.<\/p>\n<p>Before Ms. Ephron\u2019s death, Ms. Streep said she would have called her to \u201cget some jokes and some advice and she would ask who was speaking and in what order and eventually get her to write my speech for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut sometimes you have to wait until your friend leaves the room to say how great she is,\u201d she said, \u201cbecause she absolutely would never put up with any of this if she were within earshot.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com\/2012\/07\/09\/a-memorial-service-for-nora-ephron-attracts-many-celebrities\/%20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read the rest. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The stars came out in the afternoon in New York City today \u2014 all to pay tribute to writer\/director\/friend to everyone, Nora Ephron.
