That\u2019s one bishop\u2019s assessment of Orange County\u2019s Crystal Cathedral \u2014 a.k.a. Christ Cathedral<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 after taking a tour yesterday.<\/p>\n

Details:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0A group of Catholic leaders from around the world toured Wednesday the future largest Catholic cathedral in the United States:\u00a0Christ Cathedral.<\/a><\/p>\n

They saw possibilities everywhere.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s the vast infrastructure set up to televise the world-wide \u201cHour of Power\u201d television program from the\u00a0Crystal Cathedral<\/a>\u00a0Ministries, which sold its campus in January to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange in a\u00a0court-ordered bankruptcy case<\/a>. The diocese is considering how it can tap into that model and possibly televise its sermons and programs.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s the spot where the Rev. Robert H. Schuller addressed congregants inside and outside his first Garden Grove Community Church, now the Arboretum at the Crystal Cathedral. Schuller built a balcony and installed speakers to address congregants sitting in their cars. Catholics are exploring how to incorporate new technology, perhaps with smart phones or iPads, to reach parishioners outside.<\/p>\n

And there\u2019s the vast 34-plus acre campus, featuring six buildings in addition to the well-known cathedral with its more than 10,000 glass panes. The diocese is considering bringing music and more public art into the campus\u2019 vast open spaces.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a property that defies imagination,\u201d said Rob Neal, interim chief operating officer of the Christ Catholic Cathedral Corporation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never appreciated the impact this campus had,\u201d Neal told visiting bishops, archbishops and cardinals.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a holy place\u2026but it does have good acoustics,\u201d Neal said.<\/p>\n

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, archbishop of Washington, D.C., called it a \u201cgreat opportunity for evangelization.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s mind-boggling,\u201d said Archbishop Daniel Cronin of Connecticut.<\/p>\n

Hank Evers, director of development and communications for the Orange Catholic Foundation, said the cathedral has the potential to help with the Vatican\u2019s goals of evangelization and its upcoming \u201cYear of Faith\u201d plans.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis has world-wide implications,\u201d Evers said. \u201cWe can create here the most significant Catholic cultural center in the world outside of the Vatican.\u201d<\/p>\n

The religious leaders are in town to attend a convention of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic service organization. The diocese invited them to tour the campus this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an overwhelming structure,\u201d Wuerl said. \u201cBeautiful, uplifting, inspiring. The great Catholic tradition can be experienced here, made to come alive here. That opens a lot of possibilities.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
