About 12 years ago, Hanna Mignogno was listening to a speaker at a conference when she felt compelled to get up and walk outside.<\/p>\n
She sat on a wall facing a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary, listening to the call from God to enter religious life grow louder and louder.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started thinking about it and couldn\u2019t turn it off,\u201d she said. \u201cI was thinking about it and it was right. It was just an overwhelming sense of peace when you know something is right.\u201d<\/p>\n
Sister Hanna, 49, a first-grade teacher at Cardinal Shehan School in Baltimore, professed her final vows as a School Sister of Notre Dame June 16 at the chapel at Villa Assumpta in Towson.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just a memory I\u2019ll remember and go back to,\u201d Sister Hanna said of that commitment.<\/p>\n
Growing up in Pennsylvania, Sister Hanna attended Catholic elementary school and was active in her parish.<\/p>\n
She first heard the calling to religious life \u2013 \u201ca brief, fleeting thought\u201d \u2013 around age 14, but didn\u2019t give it too much thought. The idea of dedicating her life to God \u201ccame back periodically, but it wasn\u2019t something I was ready to think about,\u201d Sister Hanna said.<\/p>\n
As an adult, she remained active in parish life, dated and wanted to marry.<\/p>\n
\u201cI really did want to do that,\u201d Sister Hanna said. \u201cI didn\u2019t give up on the idea that I wanted a family. I think God was calling me to a different family.\u201d<\/p>\n
She moved from Pennsylvania to Baltimore in 2002 to enter the School Sisters of Notre Dame, a religious community to which she was drawn after being a teacher for 20 years.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s just a sense of belonging and praying together,\u201d Sister Hanna said. \u201cI feel very much a part of it, of wanting to be in community and doing what\u2019s necessary for community. It\u2019s together that you grow and change.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
