Standing before their wives, children, friends and parishioners, 10 men were ordained permanent deacons by Cardinal Se\u00e1n P. O\u2019Malley on Sept. 22 at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Church is blessed to have these 10 fine men answer the call of God,\u201d Cardinal O\u2019Malley said in his homily.<\/p>\n

Those ordained are Deacons Robert C. Balzarini, Vincent Gatto, James T. Hinkle, Michael C. Joens, Jonathan Jones, Brian K. Kean, Thomas O\u2019Shea, Louis J. Piazza, William K. Reidy, and Paulo Torrens.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a great thrill to have Paulo in this class,\u201d stressed Cardinal O\u2019Malley, noting that he is the first member of the Brazilian community to be ordained a permanent deacon.<\/p>\n

The deacon, from the Greek \u201cdiakonos,\u201d meaning servant or minister, is the first of three ranks of ordained ministry in the Church. Among the many functions they perform in parishes, deacons may preside at baptisms, weddings and rites of Christian burial, assist the priest at Mass, proclaim the Gospel and deliver homilies. In addition to parish assignments, each of the new deacons will also assist in the work of one of the central ministries of the archdiocese.<\/p>\n

In his homily, the cardinal exhorted the men to a life of service to the Church and to the faithful.<\/p>\n

\u201cChrist is our master, but he comes to serve, not to be served,\u201d he said. \u201cThis, too, is the role of a deacon.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added that \u201cto be a servant requires great strength and loyalty,\u201d but stressed that \u201cto be a servant with Christ the suffering servant is a privilege.\u201d<\/p>\n

In order to be a servant, deacons must devote themselves to prayer, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA huge part of your ministry will be praying \u2014 for the Church, for the people of God,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
