With few sparks and little clarity on the immense gulf that truly separates the two men and their policies,<a title=\"The Times\u2019s report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/04\/us\/politics\/obama-and-romney-hold-first-debate.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wednesday\u2019s encounter<\/a>\u00a0provided little guidance for voters still trying to understand the choice in next month\u2019s election.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Translation: our guy lost.<\/p>\n<p>More insightful\u00a0was the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/10\/04\/us\/politics\/obama-and-romneys-friendly-fire-the-tv-watch.html?hp%20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">TV review<\/a><\/strong> of the proceedings by Alessandra Stanley:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Theirs was a glaringly public confrontation that looked oddly intimate and personal. And that may help explain why tens of million of people tune in \u2014 there is nothing else like it on television. It\u2019s not a gladiator fight, or a boxing match or the\u00a0<a title=\"More articles about the Super Bowl.\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/subjects\/s\/super_bowl\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Super Bowl<\/a>; it\u2019s not a quiz show, a singing competition, a beauty pageant or a finale of \u201cSurvivor.\u201d If anything, these confrontations look more like a dispute in couples therapy: neither partner can really win, but either one could get rattled and blurt out something unforgivable.<\/p>\n<p>That scale-tipping moment didn\u2019t happen\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026It looked less like a historic first than a rerun, an archival clip. Mostly, the subdued, old-school tone was helped along by [PBS anchor Jim] Lehrer, who was moderating his 12th presidential debate. He presided over this one with courtesy, fairness and absolutely no flair for enlivening the discussion.
