The Education Minister of Ontario, Canada \u2014 a professing Catholic who sends her children to Catholic schools \u2014 declared October 10 that the province\u2019s publicly funded Catholic schools may not teach students that abortion is wrong because such teaching amounts to \u201cmisogyny,\u201d which is prohibited in schools under a controversial anti-bullying law.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking away a woman\u2019s right to choose could arguably be considered one of the most misogynistic actions that one could take,\u201d Laurel Broten said during a\u00a0press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBill 13,\u201d she asserted, \u201cis about tackling misogyny.\u201d<\/p>\n

Passed in June,\u00a0Bill 13<\/a>\u00a0requires schools to provide \u201ca positive school climate that is inclusive and accepting, regardless of race, ancestry, place of origin, color, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, age, marital status, family status or disability.\u201d The law specifically mandates that schools \u2014\u00a0Catholic schools included<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 establish \u201cgay-straight alliance\u201d organizations. Now, it seems, it will also be used to infringe even further on religious freedom by prohibiting Catholic schools from teaching that abortion is sinful.<\/p>\n

Broten, in her capacity as minister responsible for women\u2019s issues, had called the press conference \u201cto express [her] disappointment\u201d with a press conference held earlier in the day by three provincial legislators in which they argued that Ontario taxpayers should not be forced to pay for abortions. Those men had the audacity, Broten averred, \u201cto reopen the debate in Ontario about a woman\u2019s right to choose\u201d \u2014 \u201ca debate \u2026 that has been ended for quite some time.\u201d Their press conference, she added, \u201cwas frankly disheartening.\u201d (Note, by the way, that the legislators were not even talking about banning abortion itself, just public funding of it.)<\/p>\n

Asked by a member of the press if it was \u201cappropriate\u201d for Catholic schools to \u201clet kids out of school to go to anti-abortion rallies,\u201d Broten said that \u201cin Ontario we support Catholic education, support the teaching of love and tolerance in our Catholic schools and at the same time support a woman\u2019s right to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, the government of Ontario \u2014 led by pro-choice Premier Dalton McGuinty, who is also a Catholic \u2014 supports Catholic education only up to the point where it conflicts with left-wing orthodoxy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am one that supports Catholic education and has been adamantly in support of women\u2019s right to choose for many years and I do not see a conflict in those,\u201d Broten continued.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

UPDATE:<\/strong> \u00a0Cardinal Thomas Collins commented<\/a><\/strong> on this situation yesterday:<\/p>\n

In a rebuke to comments made by Education Minister Laurel Broten, Cardinal Thomas Collins told a packed audience that the identity of Catholic schools must be respected and the mission of Catholic schools includes engaging in pro-life activities.<\/p>\n

Collins made his comments to 1,700 people at the annual Cardinal\u2019s Dinner on Thursday night a day after Broten suggested that under the province\u2019s new anti-bullying legislation Catholic schools should not be teaching that abortion is wrong because \u201cBill-13 is about tackling misogyny.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTaking away a woman\u2019s right to choose could arguably be considered one of the most misogynistic actions that one could take,\u201d she said at a press conference. \u201cI don\u2019t think there is a conflict between choosing Catholic education for your children and supporting a woman\u2019s right to choose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Collins did not specifically mention Broten, and neither she nor Premier Dalton McGuinty attended the dinner at Toronto\u2019s Metro Convention Centre. The Ontario government was represented by Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Charles Sousa. He heard the cardinal defend the rights of Catholic education in no uncertain terms.<\/p>\n

Collins said the Catholic identity of Catholic schools is \u201crecognized and protected\u201d by section 93 of the constitution and by section 1 of the Education Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cBoth the constitution and the Education Act make it clear that the Catholic identity of the school must be respected,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
