{"id":1854,"date":"2011-02-20T23:42:16","date_gmt":"2011-02-21T04:42:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/deaconsbench\/?p=1854"},"modified":"2015-03-13T17:30:51","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T21:30:51","slug":"in-the-e-mail-a-dissenting-view-of-sundays-homily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2011\/02\/in-the-e-mail-a-dissenting-view-of-sundays-homily\/","title":{"rendered":"In the e-mail: a dissenting view of Sunday&#039;s homily"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>This arrived late Sunday, from a parishioner who took issue with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/deaconsbench\/2011\/02\/19\/homily-for-february-20-2011-7th-sunday-in-ordinary-time\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">my homily<\/a><\/strong> that morning:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I really feel you were misguided in you presentation of today\u2019s sermon at the 11:30 AM Mass.<\/p>\n<p>Loving people and reaching out with love to those that have hurt us, (individually) is one thing.   And has to be done on a selective basis.<\/p>\n<p>Reaching out and loving a people or a terrorist leader like Osama is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>He is a madman that wants and continues to direct our destruction \/ down fall and causes (through his orders and philosophy) continuing acts of violence in the free world.<\/p>\n<p>When you are dealing with what I believe to be a \u201cdisciple of the Devil\u201d you are dealing with someone that is headed for hell and unforgivable.  He is following  a philosophy (like Hitler did) and made it a religion (like Hitler did with the Nazi Occult).<\/p>\n<p>Do you really believe that people in the 1940\u2019s should have \u201cloved and prayed\u201d and \u201cforgiven\u201d Hitler ?<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>The same would apply today, with all Disciples of the Devil.<\/p>\n<p>Einstein, makes a valid point:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe true problem lies in the hearts and thoughts of men. It is not a physical but and ethical one. What terrifies us is not the explosive force of the atomic bomb but the power of the wickedness of the human heart.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I am sorry if the above may offend you.<\/p>\n<p>I still believe, on a personal, individual, basis \u2013 with people that are loving, human beings, (and not known to be \u201canimals\u201d) that what you said this morning is true.<\/p>\n<p>People are measured by their actions\u2026..and no matter how hard we try to forgive, sometimes their actions are so terrible that forgiveness is not possible.<\/p>\n<p>Some people are \u201cunforgiven\u201d\u2026and there are places marked in Hell for them.  Do you believe that Jesus would forgive (pardon) Lucifer ?<\/p>\n<p>Bye the way, I still do respect you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To answer the last question: as far as I know, the gospels do not give us an example of Christ ever refusing anyone forgiveness.\u00a0 I\u2019m not aware of any example of Jesus personally withholding his love from anyone, either.<\/p>\n<p>All I can go on is today\u2019s gospel: \u201cLove your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.\u201d\u00a0 Whether or not Jesus would forgive Lucifer \u2014 and, frankly, it\u2019s not for us to know how Christ or His Father would ultimately judge anyone \u2014 he almost certainly loves him and prays for him, and all those who fall under his influence.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t he do as much on the cross?<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This arrived late Sunday, from a parishioner who took issue with my homily that morning: I really feel you were misguided in you presentation of today\u2019s sermon at the 11:30 AM Mass.
