{"id":19098,"date":"2012-12-15T07:37:14","date_gmt":"2012-12-15T12:37:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/?p=19098"},"modified":"2016-09-30T17:01:19","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T21:01:19","slug":"the-deacon-who-preaches-in-glass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2012\/12\/the-deacon-who-preaches-in-glass\/","title":{"rendered":"The deacon who preaches in glass"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Meet stained glass artist, Deacon Bob Markert in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.courier-journal.com\/article\/20121214\/PRIME\/312140138\/Artist-Bob-Markert-captures-faith-stained-glass?nclick_check=1%20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Louisville Courier-Journal:\u00a0 <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The pounding of a mallet and the ratcheting of a ladder echoed through the front atrium of Brescia Hall on the Ursuline Campus on a crisp November morning.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2012\/12\/markert.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-19099\" title=\"markert\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2012\/12\/markert.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"423\"><\/a>Bob Markert and Peter Eichhorn were busy installing stained-glass windows designed decades ago by Markert, filled with symbols associated with the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville.<\/p>\n<p>Sister Ruth Ann Haunz, an Ursuline Leadership Council member eagerly watching the proceedings, pointed out that one of the windows was going in backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMea culpa,\u201d Markert said with a smile, gentling smiting his breast with his fist.<\/p>\n<p>Soon enough, the project was done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re finally back home,\u201d Markert said. \u201cGood job, Peter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re still good, Bob,\u201d replied Eichhorn, who has worked with Markert on art-glass projects for nearly half a century.<\/p>\n<p>This was no simple matter of interior decorating. The windows, installed in a new spot after their original chapel location was dismantled, have a heritage stretching back decades.<\/p>\n<p>And so does the artist behind them.<\/p>\n<p>Untold thousands of worshippers have prayed beneath Markert\u2019s stained-glass creations in houses of worship of all types in the Louisville area \u2014 Catholic, Baptist, Orthodox Christian, Jewish, Mormon, Episcopal and others \u2014 as well as in hospital chapels and lobbies and other settings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call them my children of the heart, my window children,\u201d said Markert, 71.<\/p>\n<p>The Roman Catholic deacon\u2019s art is closely woven with his ministry.
