A lot of you may remember this video, which has been making the rounds for a few years. It shows eight-month-old Jonathan Breaux responding to his mother\u2019s voice for the first time, after getting a cochlear implant.<\/p>\n<\/iframe>\nThat was five years ago. \u00a0What\u2019s happened since? \u00a0The good people at <a href=\"http:\/\/todayhealth.today.com\/_news\/2013\/01\/06\/16194591-viral-video-baby-boy-in-cochlear-implant-video-is-5-now-doing-great#.UOoSn2T0hRk.twitter%20\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">TODAY<\/a><\/strong> decided to find out:<\/p>\n<blockquote>Posted on YouTube in April of 2008, the video of \u201cJonathan\u2019s Cochlear Implant Activation\u201d has received more than 3.6 million hits and thousands of comments from viewers, many clamoring for an update.<\/p>\nFive-year-old Jonathan is \u201cdoing great,\u201d according to his parents, Brigette and Mark Breaux of Houston, Texas.<\/p>\n\u201cHe\u2019s in kindergarten and we\u2019re working on speech,\u201d Brigette, his 35-year-old stay-at-home mom, told TODAY.com. \u201cHe can hear everything that we say to him. It\u2019s of course artificial hearing but he can hear and understand what we\u2019re saying.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"vine-inlinePhoto__16194804\" data-contentid=\"16194804\">\n<div>\nAfter a bout with bacterial meningitis left him deaf, Jonathan Breaux regained hearing with the help of a cochlear implant, and is now a happy 5-year-old.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\u201cHe\u2019s a flirt,\u201d adds Mark, a 36-year-old corporate controller. \u201cHe was chasing girls around the playground when Brigette went to see him for his class party. He\u2019s a handful.\u201d<\/p>\nHe\u2019s also a bit of a miracle. On Christmas Eve of 2007, when Jonathan was just four months old, he contracted\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/meningitis\/bacterial.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">bacterial meningitis<\/a>, an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord that can result in brain damage or death. He was hospitalized and recovered; however, the infection took a heavy toll on the boy and his parents.<\/p>\n\u201cWe\u2019ve definitely had some challenges,\u201d says Mark, explaining how his son now uses a \u201cwalker\u201d on wheels to help him with balance issues. \u201cThe meningitis left him with the equivalent of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kidshealth.org\/parent\/medical\/brain\/cerebral_palsy.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">cerebral palsy<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\nIt also left him deaf. And in those stressful days following his meningitis diagnosis, his parents had to make a huge decision.<\/p>\n\u201cWe were in the hospital and because of the meningitis, we only had a couple of weeks to decide if we were going to do the cochlear implant,\u201d says Mark. \u201cThe cochlea was hardening because of the meningitis. We had a limited window to make a decision and if we didn\u2019t make it, it would completely ossify and we would never be able to do the implant in the future.\u201d<\/p>\nThe Breauxs decided to go ahead with the surgery \u2014 and to post videos of the results on YouTube in order to help other parents going through the same experience\u2026.<\/p>\n\u2026Mark, who recorded the video, is elated by his son\u2019s accomplishments.<\/p>\n\u201cHis progress is growing every day,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s phenomenal. The bacterial meningitis he had was one of the worst kinds possible. The doctors and therapists who\u2019ve been around him the last five years say it\u2019s a miracle what he\u2019s doing today.
