M. Cristina Paglinauan, associate rector of the Church of the Redeemer in Homeland.<\/p>\n<p>Dunham, who stopped by with her 3-year-old son, Beckett, said she would normally attend church to observe Ash Wednesday, but she and her family recently moved to the area from Silver Spring and are still searching for a congregation.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing a white surplice and purple stole, Paglinauan stood outside Starbucks for about an hour Wednesday with Emily Perper, an intern with the Episcopal Service Corps, asking passers-by if they would like to receive ashes. She held in her left hand a small container of crushed palm ashes, an ancient symbol of penitence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not pushing them on people,\u201d said Paglinauan, who last year performed the rite for the first time outside Atwater\u2019s restaurant in<a id=\"PLGEO100100603010200\" title=\"Belvedere Square\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/us\/maryland\/baltimore-county\/baltimore\/belvedere-square-PLGEO100100603010200.topic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Belvedere Square<\/a>. She said some people don\u2019t look up, some politely decline. She remembered one person last year begging off with \u201cNo, thank you, I\u2019m actually Jewish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pastors outside light rail stops, Penn Station, coffee shops, pubs, wine stores and churches were not inclined to check religious denominations. The ritual \u2014 marking the beginning of the 40-day season of Lent that culminates in the celebration of\u00a0<a id=\"PEHST00000165\" title=\"Jesus Christ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/religion-belief\/christianity\/jesus-christ-PEHST00000165.topic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jesus Christ<\/a>\u2018s death and resurrection on\u00a0<a id=\"12014002\" title=\"Easter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/religion-belief\/religious-festivals\/easter-12014002.topic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Easter Sunday<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 is observed chiefly in Catholic and Episcopal churches, though some Lutheran congregations and other Protestant denominations also take part.<\/p>\n<p>In the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, Ashes to Go started in 2011 with\u00a0<a id=\"EVFES0000083\" title=\"Epiphany\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/arts-culture\/holidays\/epiphany-EVFES0000083.topic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Epiphany<\/a>\u00a0Episcopal Church in\u00a0<a id=\"PLGEO100100603160000\" title=\"Timonium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/us\/maryland\/baltimore-county\/timonium-PLGEO100100603160000.topic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Timonium<\/a>. Last year eight churches took part, and this year there were at least nine, said Sharon Tillman, a spokeswoman for the diocese.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, in many ways, this is a recovery of something that\u2019s really old,\u201d said Lindh-Payne, referring to Jesus and his disciples spreading the word in the streets, marketplaces and on hillsides. \u201cThey were where the people were.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No Roman Catholic churches in the area were taking part, said Sean Caine, spokesman for the\u00a0<a id=\"ORCIG000086\" title=\"Archdiocese of Baltimore\" href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/topic\/religion-belief\/christianity\/roman-catholicism\/archdiocese-of-baltimore-ORCIG000086.topic\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Archdiocese of Baltimore<\/a>. He said the church believes the ritual should takes place in the context of a Mass.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimoresun.com\/news\/maryland\/bs-md-ashes-to-go-20130213,0,4205801.story\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Read the rest.\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure about that last line. \u00a0Some of us in New York can remember when the Archdiocese used to do something similar; about 20 years ago, Cardinal John O\u2019Connor dispatched priests and seminarians to Penn Station and Grand Central Station to greet commuters, who could get dabbed with ashes on their way to work. \u00a0I know of a few churches in the city that still stay open all day and have people standing by between Masses, armed with small jars; folks can run in between Masses, get their ashes, then head back to the office. \u00a0In my own parish, people customarily drop by at all hours to ring the rectory bell and ask for ashes. And it\u2019s not uncommon to deliver them to people who can\u2019t get to church. I spent part of Ash Wednesday visiting the local police precinct with my pastor and another priest; we led two brief prayer services and distributed ashes. \u00a0When the guys at the firehouse found
