Before he became pope, he had some thoughts on the subject. \u00a0Fr. Thomas Reese explains in the National Catholic Reporter:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

In\u00a0On Heaven and Earth<\/em>,\u00a0the book he co-authored with Rabbi Abraham Skorka, Cardinal Bergoglio wrote, \u201cOne could deny communion to a public sinner who has not repented, but it is very difficult to check such things.\u201d<\/p>\n

One should note that he said, \u201ccould\u201d not \u201cmust.\u201d And as an experienced pastor, he stressed the difficulty of checking whether a person is \u201ca public sinner who has not repented.\u201d Many American bishops, like Cardinals Francis George and Donald Wuerl,\u00a0have taken similar positions.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Bergoglio said it would be wrong for someone to receive communion who \u201crather than uniting the people to God, warps the lives of many people.\u201d Such a person \u201ccannot receive communion; it would be a complete contradiction.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the book, the communion issue came\u00a0up not in the context of abortion but of injustice. He referred to those \u201cwho have not only killed intellectually or physically, but also have killed indirectly through the poor use of resources by paying unjust wages.\u201d He called them hypocrites because \u201cIn public they may form welfare societies, but they do not pay their employees a wage corresponding to their work or they hire them \u2018under the table.'\u201d<\/p>\n

So if you are paying your employees off the books, with no payroll taxes, then Pope Francis would consider you a \u201cpretend\u201d Catholic suffering from spiritual hypocrisy and schizophrenia. He acknowledged that there are many such people \u201cwho hide within the Church and do not live according to the\u00a0justice that God proclaims.\u201d If you are such a person, he\u00a0would want you to ask yourself whether you are ready for communion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
