The president of a prominent Minnesota Catholic high school resigned last week after he informed other school officials that he is in a same-sex relationship, according to a letter sent Tuesday to people connected to\u00a0Totino-Grace High School<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>William Hudson<\/a>\u2018s resignation from the\u00a0Fridley school<\/a>\u00a0was effective last Friday. The letter detailing his exit came from the two leaders of the private school\u2019s corporate\u00a0board.<\/p>\n

\u201cBill informed us that he is in a committed same-sex relationship and voluntarily offered his resignation,\u201d wrote co-presidents of the board,\u00a0Mark Motzel<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Mary Wilcox<\/a>. They went on to praise his academic and financial stewardship during nine years at the school, including the last two as its\u00a0leader.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat said, leading a\u00a0Catholic school<\/a>\u00a0while living in a committed same-sex relationship is not consistent with teachings of the\u00a0Catholic Church<\/a>,\u201d their letter to alumni, parents and others\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Hudson called his resignation a \u201cdeeply personal\u201d decision. He said he loved being part of the Totino-Grace community, and reached his decision after \u201ca great deal of prayer, discernment and\u00a0reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThough heartbreaking and painful, I must say that it is freeing to be open about the most important thing in my life and to live an authentic life,\u201d Hudson said. \u201cFor over 20 years I have placed service of the Catholic Church ahead of my family. I am excited to now be able focus on my 2 children and my partner of 18 years as my first\u00a0priority.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he believes God was with him in his journey and his career and blessed him with the opportunity to serve Catholic schools and the church. He had no comment beyond the\u00a0statement.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
