{"id":24534,"date":"2013-07-08T19:47:30","date_gmt":"2013-07-08T23:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/?p=24534"},"modified":"2016-09-30T16:03:21","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T20:03:21","slug":"st-louis-cardinals-ban-religious-symbol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2013\/07\/st-louis-cardinals-ban-religious-symbol\/","title":{"rendered":"Manager Bans Religious Symbols on Pitchers Mound"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2013\/07\/Cardinals.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24535\" title=\"Cardinals\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2013\/07\/Cardinals-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/sports\/baseball\/cardinals-fan-raises-hell-religious-symbols-stadium-article-1.1393153\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Details:\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The St. Louis Cardinals have done away with religion at Busch Stadium after a fan raised hell over Christian symbols on the pitching mound.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Vines, who was watching on TV, noticed what appeared to be a cross and an ichthus \u2014 better known as a Jesus fish \u2014 etched on the mound next to the cleat scraper and contacted the Riverfront Times\u2019 news blog to express his outrage.<\/p>\n<p>Vines, who describes himself as a lifelong Cardinals supporter, took offense to the religious images in a \u201cplace of hallowed ground not just for Christians, but for Cardinal fans of all religions, including none at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2013\/07\/cardsweb9s-2-web.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-24536\" title=\"cardsweb9s-2-web\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/56\/2013\/07\/cardsweb9s-2-web-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow come nobody\u2019s mentioning this?\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.riverfronttimes.com\/dailyrft\/2013\/06\/busch_stadium_cardinals_christian_symbols.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">he wrote the Riverfront Times<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s totally inappropriate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vines also saw a potential conflict of interest for Cardinals owners, who enjoy tax abatements while running both the team and stadium as \u201ccivic institutions,\u201d and thus shouldn\u2019t promote any specific religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere may be Christian Cardinals who don\u2019t like it,\u201d Vine, who is Jewish, argued.<\/p>\n<p>Some, like ace Adam Wainwright, don\u2019t seem to mind at all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve been there every time for me,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/sports\/baseball\/professional\/kelly-moves-into-th-starter-spot\/article_58f55818-f506-5aef-903d-39b32b888d5f.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wainwright told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about the symbols<\/a>. The paper reported that a member of the grounds crew puts the symbols on the mound before most home games and the ichthus is actually a No. 6 in honor of Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musuial, who died in January.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the images represent, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak has ordered that they be removed permanently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just not club policy to be putting religious symbols on the playing field or throughout the ballpark,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/sports\/baseball\/professional\/cross-removed-from-busch-stadium-mound\/article_e0d7dc2a-39f9-5b32-9779-b502c8bee672.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch<\/a>. \u201cI didn\u2019t ask for the reason behind it.
