{"id":2478,"date":"2011-03-21T09:27:08","date_gmt":"2011-03-21T13:27:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/community\/deaconsbench\/?p=2478"},"modified":"2016-09-30T17:47:26","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T21:47:26","slug":"too-many-men-the-shocking-effects-of-abortion-in-asia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2011\/03\/too-many-men-the-shocking-effects-of-abortion-in-asia\/","title":{"rendered":"Too many men: the shocking effects of abortion in Asia"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>A new study out of Canada paints <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/abortions-give-rise-to-asias-lost-boy-generation-2247447.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>a grim picture<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Abortions of female\u00a0<a id=\"KonaLink0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/abortions-give-rise-to-asias-lost-boy-generation-2247447.html#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: blue\">fetuses<\/span><\/a> have led to a massive surplus of young unmarried men in India and China, raising fears of an outcast group that could threaten the social fabric, a study said Monday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/56\/2011\/03\/ChineseChildren_large.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2479\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/56\/2011\/03\/ChineseChildren_large-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trend took root in the 1980s when ultrasound technologies made it easier for\u00a0<a id=\"KonaLink1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/abortions-give-rise-to-asias-lost-boy-generation-2247447.html#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: blue\">families<\/span><\/a> to detect fetal sex early and to abort if it was not what the parents desired, said the analysis in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Sons have traditionally been preferred over daughters in many parts of China, India and South Korea due to social, cultural and financial motivations. Sex-selective\u00a0<a id=\"KonaLink2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/abortions-give-rise-to-asias-lost-boy-generation-2247447.html#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: blue\">abortion<\/span><\/a> is outlawed but can be difficult to enforce.<\/p>\n<p>The phenomenon was first spotted in South Korea in the early 1990s, when the sex ratio at birth (SRB) \u2013 typically 105 male births to every 100 female births \u2013 rose to 125 in some cities.<\/p>\n<p>Similar rises in male births were seen in China, \u201ccomplicated by the one-<a id=\"KonaLink3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/abortions-give-rise-to-asias-lost-boy-generation-2247447.html#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"color: blue\">child\u00a0policy<\/span><\/a>, which has undoubtedly contributed to the steady increase in the reported SRB from 106 in 1979, to 111 in 1990, 117 in 2001 and 121 in 2005,\u201d said the study.<\/p>\n<p>India has seen \u201csex ratios as high as 125 in Punjab, Delhi and Gujarat in the north but normal sex ratios of 105 in the southern and eastern states of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<p>In parts of China where a second child is allowed, after a daughter is the first born, the SRB for the second is 143, suggesting that many choose to abort a second girl fetus in favor of trying again for a boy.<\/p>\n<p>Estimates of China\u2019s actual population difference in 2005 pointed to 1.1 million excess males, with men under 20 exceeding the number of females by around 32 million, said the study led by Therese Hesketh, University College London Centre for International Health and Development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese men will be unable to marry, in societies where marriage is regarded as virtually universal, and where social status and acceptance depend, in large part, on being married and creating a new family,\u201d said the authors.<\/p>\n<p>Referred to in China as \u201cguang gun,\u201d meaning \u201cbare branches,\u201d these men are presumed to be unable to bear fruit by coupling and raising a family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn China and parts of India the sheer numbers of unmated men are a further cause for concern,\u201d said the study.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/health-and-families\/abortions-give-rise-to-asias-lost-boy-generation-2247447.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>Read more<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study out of Canada paints a grim picture: Abortions of female\u00a0fetuses have led to a massive surplus of young unmarried men in India and China, raising fears of an outcast group that could threaten the social fabric, a study said Monday.
