He was 74.<\/p>\n<p>After his funeral Mass at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook, he will be laid to rest at Bellaghy Cemetery in Co Derry.<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of people, including many from the world of art, politics and entertainment, were in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>The chief celebrant was Heaney family friend Monsignor<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Brendan%20Devlin&amp;article=true\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Brendan Devlin<\/a>\u00a0from Derry, while the co-celebrants are Auxiliary Bishop of Dublin Eamonn Walsh,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_organisation=Church%20of%20Ireland&amp;article=true\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Church of Ireland<\/a>Archbishop of Dublin Michael Jackson and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Mark%20Patrick%20Hederman&amp;article=true\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mark Patrick Hederman<\/a>\u00a0from Glenstal Abbey.<\/p>\n<p>Fr Devlin described Heaney as a man who could speak to the King of Sweden, an Oxford Don and a neighbour from south Derry with the directness of a \u201ccommon and shared humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As a country, \u201cwe are keenly aware of our deprivation at the disappearance from among us of Seamus Heaney\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Fr Devlin quipped : \u201cI think he might have liked his funeral Mass to be celebrated in a Northern Ireland accent.\u201d\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026Michael Heaney, one of the poet\u2019s sons, spoke briefly to thank those who cared for his father and those who have offered support and praise since his death. He revealed that his father had sent a text message to his mother, Marie, last Friday. \u201cHis last few words in a text message minutes before he passed away in his favourite Latin were \u2018nolle timere\u2019 (\u2019don\u2019t be afraid\u2019),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A posy of flowers from the garden of the Heaney family home in Sandymount and a book of some of the poet\u2019s works were offered as gifts during the service.<\/p>\n<p>Piper Liam O\u2019Flynn played Port na bPucai to close the service.<\/p>\n<p>Mourners were led by his widow Marie and children Michael, Christopher and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Catherine%20Ann&amp;article=true\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Catherine Ann<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026 At the removal service last night, prayers were led by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin. \u201cSeamus Heaney was a great man, yet always a man of kindness and humility and a seeker of what is deepest in our common humanity,\u201d he told the congregation. \u201cGreatness and graciousness belonged together in him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The homily was given by Fr\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/search\/search-7.1213540?tag_person=Kevin%20Doran&amp;article=true\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Kevin Doran<\/a>. \u201cIt strikes me that the hermit and the poet probably have much in common: the need for solitude; the deep-down awareness of things and the self-discipline to spend hours in contemplation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe body of Seamus is at the heart of our gathering this evening and, in that sense, he is the focus of our gathering. In another sense, however, the funeral is all about the family. You have had your time for laughing and your time for embracing \u2013 and you will have them again. But this is your time for mourning.
