During the act, Twitter exploded with commentary about the performance. One topic that gained major traction was\u00a0a photo<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0Smith and his kids, Jaden and Willow, supposedly reacting to Cyrus<\/a>. Their faces of shock and horror appeared to say it all.<\/p>\n

The image was picked up and shared by outlets like\u00a0Buzzfeed<\/a>,\u00a0Us Weekly<\/a>,\u00a0Business Insider<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Yahoo! News<\/a>. However, it turns out the\u00a0Smiths weren\u2019t reacting to Cyrus<\/a>\u00a0at all.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0MTV audience cam<\/a>, which was focused on the crowd all night, shows the Smiths were actually reacting to Lady Gaga\u2019s opening performance of \u201cApplause.\u201d A look back at the feed also shows they weren\u2019t even too shocked by the 27-year-old pop star\u2019s scantily clad dance. Jaden\u2019s confused look was just some intense concentration. Willow\u2019s open mouth was caused by her gum chewing. What looked like a gasp was actually just a nose scratch.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
