Here\u2019s a haunting old hymn we\u2019ll be hearing during Mass this weekend, performed here by the incomparable Kings Choir.<\/p>\n

<\/iframe><\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.godsongs.net\/2013\/12\/the-angel-gabriel-from-heaven-came.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Background:<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>This English-language hymn was based on a translation, by English Anglican priest Sabine Baring-Gould (1834 \u2013 1924), of a Basque-language folk-style Christmas carol about the Annunciation, \u201cBirjina gaztetto bat zegoen\u201d. It is based on Luke 1:26\u221238, 42\u221248.<\/p>\nIn recent years, it has been performed by artists including Sting \u2013 but it works well as a congregational hymn, with or without accompaniment, provided you take time to learn the slightly unusual phrasing.<\/p>\nThe tune which it is usually sung to is based on a traditional Basque tune, arranged by Edgar Pettman and published in 1922.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nThe lyrics:<\/p>\n<blockquote>The angel Gabriel from heaven came, \nWith wings as drifted snow, with eyes as flame: \n\u201cAll hail to thee, O lowly maiden Mary, \nMost highly favored lady.\u201d Gloria!<\/p>\n\u201cFor know a blessed mother thou shalt be, \nAll generations laud and honor thee; \nThy son shall be Emmanuel, by seers foretold, \nMost highly favored lady.\u201d Gloria!<\/p>\nThen gentle Mary meekly bowed her head; \n\u201cTo me be as it pleaseth God,\u201d she said. \n\u201cMy soul shall laud and magnify God\u2019s holy name.\u201d \nMost highly favored lady.\u201d Gloria!<\/p>\nOf her, Emmanuel, the Christ, was born \nIn Bethlehem all on a Christmas morn, \nAnd Christian folk through-out the world will ever say: \n\u201cMost highly favored lady.\u201d Gloria!<\/p><\/blockquote>\nFor an Advent chaser, here\u2019s the beautiful interpretation by Sting:<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sting sings "Gabriel's Message"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4DpCJY6QEMI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s a haunting old hymn we\u2019ll be hearing during Mass this weekend, performed here by the incomparable Kings Choir.
