A topless protester was detained by Vatican police on Monday for attempting to steal the doll of baby Jesus from the Vatican\u2019s nativity scene. The incident occurred as thousands of people gathered in St. Peter\u2019s Square to hear the Pope\u2019s Christmas Day message.<\/p>\n
The woman, who was wearing pants and shoes, was part of the international feminist organization Femen. The group has become well-known for sending topless activists to protest world leaders and challenge the global patriarchy. The woman, identified by Femen as Ukrainian \u201csextremist\u201d Alisa Vinogradova, had \u201cGod is Woman\u201d written on her torso.<\/p>\n
Femen stated that the act was meant to protest the \u201cVatican\u2019s infringement of the rights of women to their own bodies.\u201d The alleged infringements included the Holy See\u2019s \u201cpromotion of the ban on abortion\u201d and \u201c\u2018sacred condemnation'\u201d of contraception.<\/p>\n
The would-be theft was thwarted by Vatican police before the woman could flee the nativity scene with the baby Christ doll.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
