This arrangement, by Malcom Archer, is my favorite for this particular hymn\u2014building verse by verse to a triumphant conclusion.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s typically sung during Advent but, with the Gospel this weekend featuring John the Baptist on Jordan\u2019s bank\u2014and Christ passing by\u2014 our choir will be doing this one for the communion hymn.<\/p>\n

The hymn itself dates to the 18th century, and is featured prominently in both Protestant and Catholic hymnals. Taken from the original chant,\u00a0Jordanis oras praevia, <\/i>it was adapted by Charles Coffin (d.1749), and translated by John Chandler (d.1876).<\/p>\n

On Jordan\u2019s bank the Baptist\u2019s cry
\nAnnounces that the Lord is nigh;
\nAwake and hearken, for He brings
\nGlad tidings of the King of kings.<\/p>\n

Then cleansed be ev\u2019ry heart from sin;
\nMake straight the way of God within;
\nOh, let us all our hearts prepare
\nFor Christ to come and enter there.<\/p>\n

To heal the sick stretch out Thine hand,
\nAnd bid the fallen sinner stand;
\nShine forth, and let Thy light restore
\nEarth\u2019s own true loveliness once more.<\/p>\n

All praise, eternal Son, to Thee,
\nWhose advent sets Thy people free;
\nWhom with the Father we adore
