After special study, the German bishops\u2019 conference decided to stick with the traditional wording in the Lord\u2019s Prayer while the Italian bishops\u2019 conference has decided to change the words of the prayer in their translation of the Roman Missal.<\/p>\n

The decisions come after the French bishops decided that beginning early December last year, French Catholics would change the line, \u201cLead us not into temptation,\u201d to the equivalent of \u201cdo not let us enter into temptation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2026The German bishops\u2019 conference announced Jan. 25 that after in-depth study, it would keep the line, \u201cAnd lead us not into temptation,\u201d unchanged, particularly to use the same wording as most Catholics and most other Christian denominations. But, it added, it would like to see more done in offering the faithful a clear and fuller explanation and discussion of the prayer\u2019s meaning.<\/p>\n

The line in the prayer, the bishops\u2019 committee said, is not about persuading God to not tempt the faithful, but rather it is a recognition of one\u2019s own weakness and one\u2019s trust in God\u2019s guidance \u2014 that he does not lead people to make the wrong choice.<\/p>\n

However, when the Italian bishops\u2019 conference adopted a new translation of the Bible in 2008, they chose \u201cdo not abandon us in temptation\u201d for the Lord\u2019s Prayer both in Matthew 6 and Luke 11. The Lectionary also contains the change and received Vatican approval.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
