The cathedral is raising funds to restore its historic Henry Erben organ\u2014a true piece of American Catholic history which CBS News dubbed \u201cone of the most important historic instruments in the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278510\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p>I was delighted to receive a tour of the church by Anne Riccitelli and a mini-concert by the church\u2019s music director Jared Lamenzo.<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278502\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/blogs\/deacon-greg-kandra\/a-good-fella-martin-scorsese-joins-effort-to-restore-organ-at-new-york-basilica\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Martin Scorsese is leading the effort<\/a><\/strong> to restore the instrument\u2014he grew up in the neighborhood, was an altar boy at St. Patrick\u2019s, and credits the church and its priests with literally saving his life and keeping him out of trouble and off the streets. (Film buffs should know: the baptistry of the church is where Francis Ford Coppola filmed the<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1CDlBLvc3YE\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">famously violent baptism scene<\/a><\/strong> in \u201cThe Godfather.\u201d One of the parish\u2019s most prominent members\u2014and an EMHC these days\u2014is<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/blogs\/deacon-greg-kandra\/behold-jim-gaffigan-gives-out-holy-communion\/\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim Gaffigan<\/a>.<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>As the literature for the Friends of the Erben Organ puts it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The 1868 Erben organ is a living artisitic and technological masterpiece. It represents the finest extant work of New York City organ builder Henry Erben (1800-1884). Erben was the leading Aemrican pipe organ builder in the mid-19th century, and was never surpassed in quality and craftsmanship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the words of Scorsese: \u201cWhy preserve this glorious instrument? Because it is unique and irreplaceable. Listening to the transcendent sound of this 19th century American masterpiece will take us where we need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278503\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p>Jared eagerly showed me the inner workings of this amazing instrument\u2014the ancient bellows and pipes that somehow create its rich sound.<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278504\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p>What is that sound? Listen for yourself. (Listen closely and you can hear his feet working the pedals, too.)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Historic Erben Organ\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XGqxcQAmfW8?start=42&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, there are other noteworthy details of this historic church.<\/p>\n<p>Anne pointed out a recently-donated statue of Our Lady of China\u2014a gift from the growing Chinese community in the parish. It depicts the Madonna and Child as Asian.<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278505\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p>But step outside and you can\u2019t miss an important piece of history: the wall surrounding the property, which was erected in the early 19th century to protect the church (and the faithful inside) from the anti-Catholic violence of the \u201cKnow-Nothings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278506\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p>Much of the wall has been restored and repaired\u2014a few years ago, it was in danger of collapse\u2014but before then it was still possible to see and touch bullet holes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Patrick%27s_Old_Cathedral\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Wikipedia<\/a> <\/strong>explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In 1836, the cathedral was the subject of an attempted sack after tensions between Irish Catholics and anti-Catholic Know-Nothing nativists led to a number of riots and other physical confrontations. The situation worsened when a brain-injured young woman, Maria Monk, wrote a book telling her \u201ctrue\u201d story \u2013 a Protestant girl who converted to Catholicism, and was then allegedly forced by nuns to have sex with priests, with the resulting children being baptized then killed horribly. Despite the book being debunked by a mildly anti-Catholic magazine editor, nativist anger at the story resulted in a decision to attack the cathedral. Loopholes were cut in the church\u2019s outer walls, which had just recently been built, and the building was defended from the rioters with muskets.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m thrilled that I got to see the cathedral and touch a part of Catholic history\u2014 and hear that amazing organ.<\/p>\n<p>[img attachment=\u201d278511\u2033 align=\u201daligncenter\u201d size=\u201dfull\u201d \/]<\/p>\n<p>My thanks to Jared and Anne for making it possible.
