A top Roman Catholic cardinal says he regrets that the church is portrayed as \u201canti-gay\u201d for supporting traditional marriage between a man and a woman.<\/p>\n

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, told NBC News that the church has been \u201cout-marketed\u201d on the issue by an array of people, including politicians.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been caricatured as being anti-gay,\u201d Dolan said in an interview airing Sunday on NBC\u2019s\u00a0Meet the Press<\/em>. \u201cAnd as much as we\u2019d say, \u2018Wait a minute, we\u2019re pro marriage, we\u2019re pro traditional marriage, we\u2019re not anti anybody,\u2019 I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have forces like Hollywood, when you have forces like politicians, when you have forces like some opinion-molders that are behind it, it\u2019s a tough battle,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Illinois recently became the 16th state to legalize same-sex marriage, with the new state law set to take effect on June 1, 2014.<\/p>\n

Comments by Pope Francis apparently had an impact on Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan and other legislators when the state House of Representatives voted earlier this month to pass legislation allowing gay marriage, according to theChicago Tribune<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a person is gay and seeks God and has goodwill, who am I to judge him,\u201d Pope Francis said in July.<\/p>\n

Dolan, known for his outspokenness, earlier this year called for Catholics to be more conciliatory toward gays and lesbians who may feel left behind by the church\u2019s opposition to homosexuality and same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n

The legal battle over same-sex marriage has moved to states, following the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s decision striking down a tenet of the federal Defense of Marriage Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019d be a Pollyanna to say that there doesn\u2019t seem to be kind of a stampede to do this,\u201d Dolan told David Gregory of\u00a0Meet the Press<\/em>. \u201cI regret that. I wish that were not the case for the states.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
