{"id":285340,"date":"2018-03-31T11:59:43","date_gmt":"2018-03-31T15:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/?p=285340"},"modified":"2018-03-31T11:59:43","modified_gmt":"2018-03-31T15:59:43","slug":"hymn-of-the-week-jesus-christ-is-risen-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/deaconsbench\/2018\/03\/hymn-of-the-week-jesus-christ-is-risen-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Hymn of the Week: &#8216;Jesus Christ is Risen Today&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>An Easter classic\u2014and one with an old and venerable history:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cJesus Christ Is Risen Today\u201d was first written in Latin titled \u201c<span lang=\"la\" title=\"Latin language text\">Surrexit Christus hodie<\/span>\u201c, as a Bohemian hymn in the 14th century by an unknown author on manuscripts written in\u00a0<a title=\"Munich\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Munich\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Munich<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect decorated-link\" title=\"Breslau\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Breslau\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Breslau<\/a>.\u00a0In Latin, it had eleven verses.\u00a0It was first translated into English in 1708 by\u00a0<a title=\"John Baptist Walsh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Baptist_Walsh\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Baptist Walsh<\/a>\u00a0to be included in his\u00a0<i><span lang=\"la\" title=\"Latin language text\"><a title=\"Lyra Davidica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lyra_Davidica\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lyra Davidica<\/a><\/span><\/i>\u00a0(<i>Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns<\/i>). The verses of the hymn were revised in 1749 by John Arnold. Initially the hymn only had three verses translated with just the first verse being a direct translation;\u00a0in 1740\u00a0<a title=\"Charles Wesley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Wesley\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Charles Wesley<\/a>\u00a0(one of the founders of\u00a0<a title=\"Methodism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Methodism\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Methodism<\/a>) added a fourth verse to the hymn as an alternative, which was later adopted into the hymn as part of it. The hymn is also noted for having\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect decorated-link\" title=\"Alleluia (chant)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alleluia_(chant)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alleluia<\/a>\u00a0as a refrain after every line.<\/p>\n<p>The hymn is set to a piece of music entitled \u201cEaster Hymn\u201d which was composed in the\u00a0<i><span lang=\"la\" title=\"Latin language text\">Lyra Davidica<\/span><\/i>\u00a0for \u201cJesus Christ Is Risen Today\u201d. There was a later version of \u201cEaster Hymn\u201d composed by\u00a0<a title=\"William Henry Monk\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Henry_Monk\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">William Henry Monk<\/a>\u00a0which is also used for \u201cJesus Christ Is Risen Today\u201d. Some denominations of Christianity often just use one while some use both. The hymn is sometimes confused with \u201c<a title=\"Christ the Lord Is Risen Today\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christ_the_Lord_Is_Risen_Today\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christ the Lord Is Risen Today<\/a>\u201c, which was written by Wesley.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Below, a version from the King\u2019s College Choir in
