Last weekend, I wrote about my experience baptizing 15 babies<\/a><\/strong> (gulp).\u00a0 Today, I talk a bit more about deacons and the sacrament in my column \u201cAll Things New\u201d: <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

We find ourselves intersecting with people at critical pinpoints in their lives\u2014baptisms, weddings, wakes. Moments of arrival and departure, beginnings and endings. But there\u2019s something about baptisms that sets them apart. The liturgy isn\u2019t the most elegant\u2014frankly, it\u2019s a lot of the minister just talking, reading prayer after prayer after prayer\u2014but it comes without all the theatrics of a wedding or the agonizing emotion of a wake. It is pure happiness, dabbed with oil and splashed with water. It\u2019s new. It\u2019s powerful\u2014a shot of grace in the middle of a Sunday afternoon. It\u2019s raucous. And it\u2019s unpredictable\u2014babies are as prone to laughing as they are to bawling when they get hit with the water\u2014and from time to time, gazing into the faces of proud new parents, you can\u2019t help but glimpse their own wonder and joy. This is something<\/em>, they seem to be thinking. Really something<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
